We don't value your privacy

You do not have to pay, or have a subscription to a yachting magazine, to use this forum. So Time Inc have to use advertising on the site to fund the web site. How the numbers stack up for advertisers must be interesting as most of us use ad blockers and see very few adverts. The solution will be a complaint to the data protection authority that Time Inc are not following their guidelines.

To be fair to Time inc or whatever they are called now they have been taken over, Time Inc UK? They provide a good resource for us and the intrusion of a few adds is, to me, worth it! Think on you cranky old men who whinge about it, if someone does a Google about boating matters, YBW is nearly top of the list! A good resource!

I don't like the adverts, but I put up with them. The thing I really do object to is the capture and analysis of my browsing history - I read an article here about some new product and within the next few days I receive an email from Amazon offering it to me!

Managed to delete my previous reply by accident. I use https://www.startpage.com/ for searches. It passes the query to google and strips all tracking information from the returned links. Google don't know who is searching for what, don't know which links you select and can't track what you do on other sites. It's a start wrt browsing history.

As this site is free for us to use and most of the time get invaluable information from, someone still has to administrate the site and as we all know in the general rule of life that nothing is free I can definately put up with the ads on here..!

I get the funding issue, and if that was all that it was about, I wouldn't mind either.
Consider this: you sign-up to PBO and don't mind them having your details and preferences because they're a nice little British company. So far so good. Then PBO get bought up by Time Inc. Lots of people less comfortable with that.Time Inc inherit all your data from PBO and, being what they are, seek even more. But you want the service and go along with it. Then supposing, say, Trump Venture Corp or Uber swallows Time Inc : your data is then owned by a rapacious company with no moral compass or fetters on what it would try to get away with.
IMO, that is part of what this is about - your data and the scope of this data is quite astonishing, frightening even and goes beyond what most people would consider ok for just targeting adverts - eg FB gathers phone numbers of your contacts from your phone, even if they are not FB users. This information can then be passed from pillar to post to anyone who can pay be they WinchCo trying to flog you a windlass or Russia trying to influence you and anything in between.

Well I agree with Maby, Skipper and Wazza that there must be a return to the Administrator so I won't use an adblocker. It is the price I pay for being too miserable to subscribe to their publication.

It is not free for me to use the YBW forum. Like most skippers I use PAYG and the download cost of video style adds is very considerable. Only 5 minutes on this forum will debit me over 20 Mb. I must limit my visits to a few a week and not linger on threads I once found interesting. I am not sure whether add blocker will cut this down as I may have to pay for them anyway.

A few years ago I could spend all day with the forum open for a "cost" of only about 2 Mb.

I used to use AdBlock Plus, but find uBlock Origin works better, so i don't see any ads. As for data gathering and targeted ads, most of that can be turned off in Google settings if you have a Google account. If you use the private browsing mode of your browser you won't be tracked at all or get any targeted ads. If you are worried about the information that you give to companies like Time Inc, that's really easy, don't give them any information. Easy enough to open a free email account and sign up with that, the rest of the information that you use on registrations can usually be bogus.

As for Face Book, don't use it to tell the World i'm going on holiday and will be available for burglaries for the next two weeks, or that you've just farted or all of the other nonsense people put online. All of the information in your account can be bogus, you get no junk from them at all and if they think they know anything about you, well they can think again :)

Getting Google to manage your data settings is surely like saying to a chap with a stripy pullover, mask and a sack on his shoulder "hi, can you look after my family silver, tablet and phone whilst I go and do something else".
All the "privacy settings" by Google, FB et al are almost farcical as they are the ones mining your data and they have full access to it.
I agree with everything else though. I downloaded my FB data recently and was pleasantly surprised to see how little it was due to me not giving them much info and general making a bit of an effort to keep stuff out of their hands. I'm not fooling myself though, they know a great deal more than that really (Single pixel tracking? remember FB Beacon? I'm sure nothing has changed).

If you don't accept the terms and conditions of use, you can't use the web site. What's supposed to be wrong with that?

If it was as simple as that, that would be fine. Many people can accept a quid pro quo & get some adverts for a free forum, but the scale of data acquisition goes way beyond what most people would consider reasonable.

Adverts? I had'nt noticed any!

All I get is one banner beneath the title which is sometimes Yachtie related, but nothing else. I’m on FB for a couple of acting sites and one Morgan site, but if from that Russia thinks I’d want to overthrow the government good luck to it. It may not be wrong, but I wouldn’t let FB make me start the revolution.

I disagree, the site is still free but it’s just the deal you have with your surf that is “crap”. If you were in a restaurant/bar/cafe with free WiFi then it wouldn’t be a problem for you....
