An interesting read - on the subject of Contra Rotating paddles.I know contra rotating was permitted for tugs, I dont know if passenger vessels were banned from using them world wide. As ever convenience trumped health and safety for working boatmen such as tug crew - they still have deaths
They have little faith in reproducing that stunt, they have hired River Yar boatyard to push them onto the pier with a RIB. Saw it in action yesterday.I was on Waverley last year from Portsmouth to Swanage. We sped down the Solent and completely missed Yarmouth until nearly at Hurst Castle we did a 180 turn and returned to Yarmouth at full pelt. We were just off Yarmouth pier doing about 5 knots when the paddle wheels reversed and we gently glided into the pier. Supreme seamanship. Just glad I wasn’t the skipper.
I don't know how the algorithm does it, but after reading this thread last night, I found in my YouTube prompts this morning, the video below, showing great footage of the very events you describe. Odd music...I muted it.But they did treat us to a helicopter pass by followed by lowering a crew member on board and then coming back later to winch them off again.
Back in London as of 10/10/25, sailed from Ipswich 18K views · 508 reactions | Waverley steams under Tower Bridge and enters the Upper Pool of London after sailing all the way from Ipswich (Friday 10th October). Doesn’t she look and sound fantastic as she lets London know she’s arriving!
