Wave heights data

"Significant Wave height" is a routine output from various oceanographic sensors on satellites. However, you should regard it with a certain amount of caution.

1) It does not give an indication of the extreme wave heights. recent analysis of oceanic waves suggest that "extreme" waves are much commoner than previously thought, but they don't show up in conventional SWH measures.

2) The repeat cycle of the satellites concerned is relatively long, with sparse ground tracks. The data are useful for climatological and oceanographic studies, but are not really of operational use.

The passageweather.com site gives a series of wave forecasts extending to a week ahead, contained in a .zip file that is readily downloaded. The same site also does wind and pressure maps for the same time intervals.
