Any recommendations? I want to mount a decent one on the radar arch so I can keep a video diary. It needs to have a remote control feature to take stills. I've looked at the Gopro cameras which will do the job but there are loads out there and wondered if anyone could point me to a decent one.
Thanks
Lisa

I just bought one of those GoPro things.
Actually, I only played with it a little bit, but for what I've seen so far I would think it's perfect for the job.

Gopro is very popular for (extreme) sports events etc.

Rugged, easy to use. And not too expensive
Search Youtube for Gopro Boat and see plenty - eg. this

If you look closely, you'll see them on Top Gear and the like too.

I've just bought one of the go pro hero2 cameras but not had a chance to try it out on the boat yet. I bought the motosports version as it has the suction cup and it feels really strong. As you say Lisa you can get the bacpac LCD screen and they are bringing out a wifi remote soon. I'm going to see how I get on without the screen first as the camera picks up such a big field of vision you should be able to just point it in the general direction. That's my theory anyway!

Yep, that was my theory too, and even if so far I used it just for a few clips and pics, I can confirm that I'm not missing the screen at all. To some extent, for the usage of this type of camera, not having to bother with framing is even better, imho.
Nobody in his right mind would use a GoPro for portraits or accurate/artistic photography, anyway.

I've just looked up various video tutorials and reviews etc and by the looks and sounds of it, the GoPro 2 fairs really very well and appears to get the vote for the most robust on the market. Loads of mounts as mentioned including the suction mount which has been tested on a plane at 150mph and stayed on! Not sure I'd trust the suction mount on its own tbh, no matter what they say!
Will take a look at the one you suggest Martin (thanks for that) and do some comparing but I have a feeling I shall be popping to Jessops tomorrow for the GoPro 2. Will try without the BacPac 1st, after all, it's gonna be stuck out of reach anyway and as long as it's pointed in the general direction... Will be buying a spare battery tho.
Thanks again all.

Just a thought about the remote control.

I have a waterproof Kodak camera and you can buy the remote quite cheaply BUT the sensor for it is at the front of the camera!

Apparently it won't pick up the signal if you zap it from behind.

Err........... no I don't think so....... just make sure that you have a stable platform & you should get reasonable results

If you want to put money on it, I'll happily take it of you.

Use them on James May's Man Lab, Bang goes the theory, Sport's Relief...

Quick update for anyone interested...popped to Swanick Marina where 'Landau' has a stand for the weekend and picked up the Motorsport Hero 2 along with the lcd and battery bacpacs. All set up and have to say what a neat gadget and the reproduction quality appears to be excellent. The lcd is most definitely worth forking out for imo. Looking forward to trying it for real now.
P.S. the guys at 'Landau' were great...really helpful and informative so thanks to them.

Can you confirm me if the LCD screen fits inside the underwater case?
I read contraddicting stories about that.

Hi M. The lcd comes with a selection of 'back doors' to cater for it. You just swap it with the existing one. Dead easy to remove and attach. Really impressed to be honest.

Ok if you say so but there is a difference between two Top Gear presenters doing a promotional event & an actual film shoot of Top Gear, but what do I know eh ?;)

Is the gopro approved for any bbc hd use?

I have been thinking about adding a couple... But i am still getting to grips with the xf300.... One bit of kit at a time.
