Waterproof camera

You've probably bought one by now but, if you dont need all the latest bells and whistles, why not buy a 2nd hand model from 2 or 3 years ago. It will almost certainly be good enough in terms of pic quality, and features, and will be much cheaper.

I buy most stuff on ebay if I dont "need" brand new, and cant think of anything that has been a mistake.

Canon D10

As far as I can see no one has mentioned the Canon D10, which has been rated best for photo quality in a fairly recent review see here. I have used mine snorkeling amongst coral and in pools etc. Easy to use, a very good LCD display and 12M pixels - great results around £230.

We have the sony cyber shot and have used it for about 5 years with no problems.swmbo took it down to 30m and it was fine.

Would second the Lumix. Good quality in and out of water.

Bought one for my daughter to replace two optio s that had both packed up due to water leakage.

She's very happy with it and photos are impressive.

I have an aged pentax optio and now have a Panasonic Lumix FT1.

THe Lumix focusses much quicker than the optio which couldn't really photograph moving objects, and the HD video is superb (newer optio may be much better). Other reason for going for the lumix was because it's 'drop proof' from pocket height, which I've accidentally tested out a few times. I can also give it to the 4 year old and not worry about it.

I reckon it's going to be hard enough to destroy that it's worth spending a bit more for one that takes the best videos and photos.

Does anybody make a floating camera strap?

Would recommend having a look at the Sealife range, I think they'd be a lot tougher, and designed to go underwater. The cheapest is around £200...

FT2 waterproof to 10mtrs

Thanks. I read about the Lumix in a photography mag and it claimed 10m. Everywhere else it says 3m hence my question.

Shame, because I do find I regularly swim down to 10m with the Vivitar and an underwater cam with 3x zoom and excellent (for a compact) pic quality would allow me to carry one less camera! :)

It's the new FT2 that is good to 10mtrs and retails for about 270 squids

Thank you for all the advice, which was very useful.

In the end, I bought the PANASONIC Lumix DMC-FT1 Blue Compact Digital Camera - 12.1 mp, which I found for £149.99 and free delivery at Dixons online. The link here
http://www.dixons.co.uk/gbuk/panaso...299_36_BA00002561-BV00151129/xx-criteria.html

shows both that camera and the FT2 referred to above, but since the FT2 was double the price (£305) I went for the less expensive one.

Is it any good? I have no idea. It arrives next week and so will be taken out next weekend, but I will make sure to give a not very expert opinion on it, provided I don't drop it overboard during an unexpected gybe.

Bedford,

Just my opinion of course but I think you've made a wise choice. I paid twice what you did and am still happy with the FT1. I'm no David Bailey but even without the "get me wet and beat me up a bit" capabilities, this camera has improved my photography no end!

Enjoy!

Tim

Been following this thread & in the market for a camera I can bung in my pocket so could'nt resist either. Thanks for the link to Dixons, looks like a genuine bargain.:)

I think it is.

1. The quality of the pictures is very high (although composition remains a challenge). There are various setting for resolution and quality, but even at the smallest resolution, it was clear.

2. The camera is so tough I don't even mind the children having it for the morning to take photos at the sailing club, if only so they make my own pictures look good.

3. It comes with a 150+ page instruction booklet, but then, my new phone comes with 250 pages, so that's the world we live in. I like the way I can set a pre-set for bright conditions so the pictures are not all over-exposed but the rest of it I haven't explored.

4. Battery life is good, though of course it is new.

5. It's easy to use - point and shoot - and has a good zoom.

6. I haven't put it into water yet, but it's had some bashes and survived.

7. Charging the battery is easy and quite quick, and downloading pictures to my computer as easy as you'd expect (the software seemed to happen automatically).

Canon D10 is routinely rated best

I second the Canon D10. Photo mags routinely rate it as best waterproof camera. 12 Mega pixel and image stabilisation. I really like mine.

Last weekend, SWMBO was helping launch a dinghy, involving a wade into thigh-deep water, and our now deceased digi camera was in a trouser pocket. Ah well, you live and learn.
On the basis of this forum's reccomendations I may spring for one of those Panasonics from Dixons... anybody able to persuade me otherwise...? I liked the look of the Pentax Optios and Amazon have a WS80 at only £90 (!) but there are some less than favourable reviews.
