When using the waterline lenght to calculate a hull speed what is the waterline lenght?
Is it measured straight from the bow to the stern along the centerline of the boat or is it from the bow and around the hull along the actual waterline to the stern?
Hope that makes sense.

LWL. I had always understood was length from front to back of wetted area of hull measured along centre line. Think others may argue the 1.4 bit.

Then equation for max theoretical speed was 1.4 times the square root of the LWL.

G'day Michael,

Pulled this off the net....

How To Measure Length

A motor boat is measured along its centreline from the outside of the hull aft to the outside of the hull forward. This measurement does not include any attachments such as swim platforms, outboard motors, bow sprits, etc. This measurement is called the length overall (LOA). You may also hear the term length of waterline or load waterline (LWL). This is the length of the boat, parallel to its centreline, at the line where it meets the water.
