Water tank vent ideas needed

I went to the boat today to fix a leaking tap and ended up ripping the entire fresh water system out. Funny how things spiral…. I have the idea to fit a deck filler, but just realised the breather will be well below the filler height. I’ve just done a search on here but can’t find anything definitive.
Is there a clever way to have the vent below the filler with a non return valve or something?

On my Moody there is a deck filler. The breather is on the side of the coaming in the cockpit and therefore lower than the deck. The breather is connected by a hose T off the filler neck.

I used a water hose connector with a "shut off" valve. I was lucky that my watertank vent hoses were the same diameter as garden hose. I had the vent facing upwards to allow it to work well.

On our last boat the vent was t-eed into the filler a few inches from the top. Simple and worked.

Sorry for my ignorance but how does salt water, rain, dirt stop from going through the breather into the tank?

So was this literally on the end of the breather and acted like a one way valve?
