Hi we have a stainless steel water tank but need some thing to say how much water we have left any ideas ,roy

hi the tank does not have a lid or access so dont really want to drill it as all the swarf will enter the water system

Ifiitted a simple sight guage to the S/S tank on a W33 we owned years ago, just teed into the tank oulet pipe and attached a piece of clear hose that clipped it back against a nearby bulkhead. , the upper end of this clear tube ( which has to be open ended, ope to the atmosphere, to get a reading, went to a tee in the air vent/overflow hose that was conveniently nearby. For added visibilty of the level I dropped a few fluoerescent red floating fishing tackle beads into the clear bit of hose, also marked lines on the bulkhead behind the clear tube to show 1/4, 1/2/ 3/4. SImple, cheap and worked. Our last Jeanneau came with a water flow meter, in line after the pressure pump that read on a digital counter meter on the nav table leccy panel, it counted litres passed through the water pump and was excellent. We knew how many litres (225) equalled all gone so had a very good measure from the meter of what we had left, it was reset to zero by a simple button press after filling the tanks. I have never seen these on sale in 12v form but would love one to fit on our latest floaty thing which at least does have simple gauges built into the under bunk tank tops but you have to lift locker tops etc to see what they show. .

at the time I bought a 33mm SS drillbit (SAE size) just for drilling a hole for a ultrasonic sensor in the SS water tank, and SS black water tank in our 26ft Karnic,
I placed the vacuum cleaner near the drilling to have minimal metal parts falling in the tanks, (succeeded quite well)

If you want you can borrow the drill, (if it makes sense, posting that to UK)

BART REALLY NICE OFFER , i have a hole saw so thanks for the tip i thought there might be something that goes on the outside of the the tank

Difficult to resolve without making a hole in the top of the tank.

I fitted a Vetus one many years ago and it's been excellent.
Plus once the hole is there you are able to inspect the contents of the tank for cleanliness, debris, sediment etc and you can do something about it.
Bite the bullet and drill the hole, it's not a problem.

Personal opinion is to go for anything but the mechanical float on a wire thingy.....One of the more modern capacitance devices are far more reliable.
