Waterpump keeps cutting in..

My boat is fitted with shower sump pump which takes water from the shower & sink, collects it in a box and then, when it triggers the float switch, pumps it overboard. There is a non-return seal in the sump box to stop water draining back in from the pipes. With the fat content in soap & hair shampoo the seal ceases to be effective and allows water to seap back in slowly eventually triggering the pump again, obviously this happens at a time not related to any use of the water system - so it's not simple to track down. The bad news is that the companies that sell the sump trays don't sell the seals separately and a new tray can be £75.00. I bought a Jabsco non-return valve and fitted it on the outlet pipe just after the tray.

The problem with a lot of the non return valves that use the angled rubber is they dont last and will allow a small amount of water back each time, Im becoming an expert on this as I had it for 2 years and did not find out what the issue was, in fact I burnt out a float switch as it took so long. take the valve off and see if you can blow gently through it, hard no but gently yes, this means water is dribbling through.

In the end I cut off a piece out outlet pipe about 10mm and went to my local tropical fish store and they had a shelf full of pipes, I found a weak spring loaded one way valve, as I had the pipe I found all bits needed. back at the boat I cut the pipe about a foot from the shower box and inserted the valve and 6 months later I never have a problem again.

going to the original question that priming noise you hear is drop in pressure either from a tap, leak,or air. The taps are all off, have you cecked any outside hoses I have a bow hose and it leaked once. you have checked for leaks, although it may be in areas you cant see, air coming from the diaphram in the pump is one cause as well. You can check the pump and I have to use the memory here, you prime it and disconnect the water outlet going to the boat, if it makes the noise again its the pump at fault.

Do you have a hot water tank? Many boats have a pipe from the preshure relief valve that goes overboard. If the valve leaks the water is dumped overboard.

Dose the water tank level go down on it's own? If not then it's the non return valve in the pump.

Are the bilges dry?

I had the same problem on mine

There was a click followed by the water pump cutting in and then stopping.

Every now and again it would happen again. After a few weeks it started to happen every few seconds or so.

Turned out to be the Pressure Relief valve on the hot water cylinder.

Nice and cheap/easy to replace, assuming you can get at it.

I've had the same for two seasons and decided to change the water pump for a new this year...problem completely gone.

Its the return valve in the pump and I think you should clean the pressure relief valve every now and then to make sure that does not leak.

Hi . I agree with WHO, it sounds like the pressure releif valve on the hot water cylinder.

The same thing happened on my S28, easily fixed, just replace the valve. Take it off, and take it to a plumbers merchants, will only be 4 or 5 quid. Cheaper than the marine suppliers.
Just remember to buy som PTFE tape to make a good seal when fitting the new one.

A sure sign that this is the problem, is if when the pump starts running, does hot water come out of the hot water tank overflow outlet on the out side of the boat.

Hope this is it, as it is so easily fixed.
