Hi All,

boat got lifted out last weekend and now its time do do the winterizing of the engine.
The previous owner of the boat flushed the engine (raw water cooled Bukh 10DV) with a mix of water and water miscible oil.
This mixture should be in the engine for a day and then the anti-freeze mixture used.

As this method seemed to worked for the last 23 years and the engine is in very good nick I would like to keep the 'tradition'. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

My only problem is: where to get the water miscible oil from?
Does anyone now a manufacturer of this stuff so that I can trace a vendor here in Dublin?

Thanks,
jow

What you are looking for is called inhibiting oil and is made by Volvo. It is sold by some, but not all chandleries.

I don't know about leaving it in for 24 hours and then using anti freeze. What I do is run the engine withn fresh water, then once HOT - so the thermostat valve is open - add the oil to the water and run it through - try and reciculate it if possible. Then drain it all out - in that way you won't have water in the engine over winter but instead all the internal surfaces coated with the oil.
An alternative is to mix the oil with water and anti freeze, then do as above . In that way any remaining water in the engine will be mixed with antifreeze.

Enter 'soluble cutting oil' into Google. You will find a supplier in your area.

I'm not convinced of the benefits of putting this stuff into your engine although I have heard of many who do. Modern antifreezes have excellent inhibitors that will do just as good a job as oil, possibly better. I would circulate the antifreeze, as said above until it gets hot. Then drain and stuff rags into inlet and exhaust ports.

Volvo have stopped doing inhibiting oil as it "is not environmentally friendly". I have to say it did look a bit nasty when 'disgorged' in the spring. Shame. I alwys used an inhibiting oil/anti-freeze mixture but now just do the anti-freeze mixture.

The trick with the Bukh engines is to ensure the little zinc anode in the engine block is replaced when necessary. If you do this, then a flush through with fresh water ( I empty the water tank through the engine) and finally drain down is what's needed for the waterworks.
