any body know why i got water on top of pistons on 1 side of a mercruiser v8 the engine was running slow but firing ok .when i opened the throttle there was a clicking sound and i started to lose powerr.i slowed to about2000 rev and limped home . the engine fired water out of the 4 cylenders with the plugs out the oil is milky under the rocker cover, in the sump there could be a bit of water but it looked like oil not milk.there was a little water in the carb. there is a flap in the exhaust that looks as if there is a bit of rubber worn off the end. when i took the top bit off the manifold the gasket broke (or was it leaking there looked like brown marks on the inside )

The obvious answer is, that the head gasget has gone, this is the only way i can think that water would get from your water ducting to the cylinders, it would also account for the clicking.

Could also be an exhaust manifold to water way leak, but as you say more like;y a head gasket.

Water in the pot(s) and milky oil under the rocker (oil and water when well mixed looks like dirty milk) is classic of a Head Gasket.

Check to condition of the head when you take it off - has the engine overheated badly recently ??? cus the head may be warped - causing the gasket failure. If it has not be done for a while and looks scruffy then i would advise a light head skim.

Other possibility is that the inlet manifold gasket died. I think the Merc has a water cooled inlet manifold, in which case a backfire will very often blow the gasket out from between head and inlet. It has to come off to get at the head gasket so you'll soon see. More possible explanation for all the bank ejecting water when turned over with plugs out.
