I know water in the fuel filters can be a problem for diesel boats, but always having owned a petrol engine boat I never suffered the problem.

What causes it?
HOWEVER.............

My car is under 2 yrs old, with 36,000 mls on the clock, a warning light came on yesterday and when i look up the manual it says water in the fuel filter, do not run engine and contact the dealer immediately it says!! Well we were going out to a Ball last night so I squeezed the primer ball under the bonnet several times, and the car was fine last night, no warning light. But today its back on. I will contact the dealer in the morning, but my question is, how can this happen in a car, and what does the fuel filter look like in a car, cause i thought i might have a look to see if there was anything visually wrong with it.

BTW, the car is a Honda Accord 2.2 diesel.

Cheers

Al.

I have 54 2.2 honda, 102000 on the clock, as far as I know it does not have a warning light, but the fuel filter is under the squeeze bulb, just out of reach from the top of the engine, the "book" says drain off excess water from time to time, by undoing drain plug and allow to drip into recepticle until clean diesel is seen, then replace plug, this can only be done from underneath, and by removing the under tray, I would suggest you do as instructed and go see Mr Honda. The filter can has no sight glass.

Fuel Filter Water Bleeding
1. Place a suitable container under the fuel filter to catch up the water.

2. Connect the hose (A) to water screw (B).

AB

3. Loosen the water screw at the underside of the fuel filter until water drops.

4. Drain about 85 m (2.9 fl·oz, 3.0 lmp·oz) to 150 m (5.1 fl·oz, 5.3 lmp·oz) of water.

5. Tighten the water screw securely.

6. Bleed the fuel system.

Fuel System Bleeding
Air must be bled from the fuel after disassembling the fuel system for system for service and after run out of the fuel. See the following for the procedure.

1. Fill the fuel tank with fuel.

2. Squeeze the fuel hand primer (A) and operate it 40 to 50 times. Operate the fuel hand primer unit it becomes hard.

A

3. Stop bleeding when the fuel hand primer becomes hard and start the engine.

4. Accelerate the engine for about 3 times, then check that idle speed is stable.

5. If the engine does not start, operate the hand primer again until it becomes hard.

NOTE: Note that the continuous cranking time of the engine must be 30 seconds to shorter at one operation. Cranking the engine for longer than 30 seconds can cause damage to the starter and fuel pump.

Thanks.
The car is a 06 Honda, In the manual it gives me intructions how to prime the fuel system, but when it comes to the fuel filter, all it says is to contact the dealer immediately. IT does say the fuel filter must be changed every 20,000mls or 2 yrs. my last service was 26,000mls, so it should have been done, whats the bets the dealer cut corners and didn't do it?? Although, I'll never know.

It needs serviced soon though.

Cheers

Al.
