Hi,

I am thinking of buy a yacht and had a surveyor check her out, in places it showed a reading of 20, which means 6% water. (surveyor told me)
Most other places the readings where 1.6% water.
The boat has been laid up for 2 years, therefore she would be dryer than in the water.
Is this reading anything to worry about?
We did not find any signs of blistering or weakness.
Does this reading mean's the yacht need osmosis treatment?

A quick response would be great!!

thanks for your help.

ps. readings where taken directly to gelcoat, anti foul was removed.

cheers!

How old is the boat?

IMHO if there is no sign of Osmosis then I wouldn't worry about it at all.

It doesn't really matter that the boat doesn't have osmosis now. What matters is that if you are worried about the readings, when you come to sell the boat other prospective buyers wil have the same concerns.

I had very similar readings when I bought my last boat. Readings went to 'normal' however when the bilges were emptied of water! In otherwords, check the bilges and empty them before taking readings..

Hi, I bought a Westerly some years ago which had "higher than normal" moisture readings but no signs of any blisters. The surveyor did advise me that this could well develop into osmosis. However, I bought the boat and a few years later it developed the dreaded boat pox. When I sold it, it was otherwise in superb condition, I had to take a significant hit on the price. If the boat is otherwise exactly what you want then perhaps you might be able to negotiate a price reduction to cover at least half the cost of the treatment if it does go on to develop osmosis. For my boat it would have cost £4k to £5k (26 footer) to get it properly sorted! Imho it would not be worth having the treatment carried out until it has a significant number of blisters. I don't know if any of this is of help, but surely your surveyor should be able to give you some advice as to the likelyhood of osmosis?

Reference ???

No underhull reading is worth a pinch of whatsit without reference to upperworks where it is expected to be reasonably dry strata.

a) The meter used
b) Reference for this % figure
as well as many other factors make this a hard one to answer fully and 100% correct.

6% water if TRUE amount is a lot !!! I think there is some BS going on here ... my opinion of course .

Haggle ....

a) Ask around for osmosis price for the boat
b) Haggle with seller that this is cost to treat boat
c) Get compromise on price
d) Buy and sail to your hearts content till such time that you have blisters or you sell .....

My boat and many others have high moisture readings .... but carry on for year after year without pox or blight.

I still say that the surveyor cannot directly quote %age figures from non-referenced and just straight contact detector .... so 6% I am still Mmmmmmmm !!

Have you checked if it has GRP water tanks? Most boats with such tanks show high readings in that area. Simple remedy is to fit inflatable tanks within.

I've known this happen twice and the surveyor didn't note the tanks.

Your surveyor "expert" should have picked that up, if its the case. If it is, and he didn't, I would be querying his bill.......
