Well that was fun ! I nipped down to my mates boat today to get some pictures of the inside for someone interested in it and there was a flippin wasps nest in the cockpit !

Looks like someone had undone the canopy to see if there was anything on board and left it open . I managed to get it half shut but they can still get in and out . Great fun standing in a dingy with all your camera equipment strapped to your back while wasps are dive bombing you .

So how do we get rid of them ?
Plan one is to chuck a smoke bomb in there and row away . Go back and unload 10 cans of wasp killer in there and row away again . Good plan eh :)

Nightmare - prob with spraying a can of wasp spray is it will make them angry and will make the cabin stink. Not sure when wasps sleep - but have seen them just put into bin bags and disposed of before - if you can get to the nest easily?

We are going down Sunday to remove it somehow . I might buy one of those for a laugh . My plan is to put the electric outboard on the dingy and drop my mate off on his boat to sort it out . I will pick him up again when all the wasps are gone :)

New plan is to tow the boat land side and then tackle the problem . Two blokes in a pram dingy in the wier stream getting dive bombed by wasps is funny but not smart .
Does smoke work on wasps ?
My mate wants to just kick hell out of the nest , if he does that then i'm off a bit quick !

Could you make a wooden mock-up of a 42" plasma telly, smear it with honey and leave it under the canopy? Soon enough someone will come along and take it, along with all the wasps.

I think this is a very good plan. Tackling a wasp nest with nowhere to run doesn't sound like a very good idea to me. On the other hand...

Does smoke work on wasps ?

Depends, some like it, some don't. The modern strains of skunk are likely to make them a bit angry, so best to stick to a bit of ordinary hash.

I think this too is a very good plan. Take them by surprise and kick the hell out of their nest. Stand well back whilst he does it, and make sure you check the Guiness Book of Records for the maximum number of wasp stings first. If it looks like he's close but not going to make the record, you could try a few of your own with a cocktail stick and some wasp poison or a bit of chilli sauce.

This is, of course, all my humble opinion.... (c;

All these nonsense answers to a serious question "how to get rid of the Wasps"

Serious Answer:- go to your car and make a noise like a jar of jam. When Wasps follow the noise drive away slowly but fast enough that the Wasps can't catch you. When 10 miles away from the nest speed up and drive away. Then when out of sight of the Swarm they will be disorientated and lost. Whip back, get the nest and bung it in the river or on a Pikey live-aboard. Hey Ho problem solved.

Alternatively. For £30 or so a Pest Control firm will kill them. The Sprays they sell in shops ain't much good.

Jason, do you know any bee keepers? They are usually pretty good at getting rid of wasp's nests. Failing that it is smoke, but again, special stuff and not a big cigar!

Protective gear including the hair and plenty of insect spray (get a scented one) should work on a diy basis. Try not to crush wasps, this releases a pheromone that makes nearby wasps.

Good luck!

What about ants ? How do you get rid of those ?
Ants are easy. Make up a strong sugar syrup containing some borax. Put a few dollops about where you see them and that'll put paid to them.

Alternatively buy Nippon ..... borax in sugar syrup!
