Washing socks in the same bucket as the T-shirts.

Any tips because I am doing this as a single-hander these days.

Try the American method of washing clothes. I used it on an ocean passage and it works. Buy Ammonia from a hardware store. Add a cupful of ammonia to a bucket of warmish water and put your dirty clothes in. Give them a good old soak and a bit of a stir round.
Here's the clever bit - simply wring out the wet clothes by hand and hang them out to dry. No need to rinse because the ammonia evaporates - thus saving water, so very useful on passage.
The ammonia is hugely effective at killing smelly bacteria, which is what washing is mostly about. But it's not a detergent so don't expect everything to come out dazzling white.

Well thank you for that tip. It really does make sense. I have a jar of extremely strong ammonia left behind by a tenant in my house. Haven't known what to do with it before now. Yes it is the rinsing that takes up all the fresh water. YBW strikes again.

We used to do the washing in a bucket routine but after a few times we decided that at around 5 euros a pop you could get a week load of washing done (cheapest was 3 euros most expensive 8 euros) then dried it on the boat so did not need ironing. No longer liveaboards but when we were I considered that the best 5 euros we spent.
