WASH!!!!!

vitually planing

Sorry, not even remotely close to planing.

Planing involves going "over the hump". The nose rises until the boat "climbs" over the wall of water its displacing until it starts to skim. On a boat like that the hump is very pronouced producing a very strong nose up before the plane, the larger boats then often stay nose up once planing,

Once planing the wake moves down the hull from the bow, like here where the wake is 50% of the way down the hull.

Its just a large boat pushing against a stream, a bit like the boat at the start of this video, its not planing although this one is closer, the bow is up and the stern is down but he has not climbed the hump.

And this picture, lots of wash and spray but not planing, I know as I was alongside him we were in that horrible zone around 10knots where these boats are climbing the hump but not planing and its a 10knot limit so not a happy ride.

This is planing! Just as the first "fade" occurs in the video you can just see the boat go over the hump

So yes, probably not an acceptable wash (although hard to tell as you are getting wave "additions and subtractions" from the reflected wake of previous boats) but not virtually planing.

If anyone wants a ride in a proper planing boat give me a call......

I usually like you, please don't out youself as a cretin just because you empathise with the faster mobos.

I did say that the photo doesn't show the situation well, also that the sports cruiser wasn't the worst offender, but it was doing about 12 knots through the water, I would guess it should get over the hump at about 15-18?

I have to say that really does not look like a boat doing 12 knots through the water. Too big wake, yes, but 12 knots I very much doubt.

"I have to say it scared the watsits out of us and we won't be doing that again ever!"

All part of the learning curve, more a useful lesson than a mistake, easy now to appreciate just how much trouble you can quickly get into if you do not keep your wits about you.
Perhaps next time when you have peeps aboard and are being pressurised into doing something you are not comfortable with it will be easy to say no.

Most definately! I have to say I did give in and say OK after refusing for a few hours, having seen the river flow.
I can definately say now, if I feel uncomfortable it's not going to happen.

I do understand how easy it is to make a lot of wash. We had to shift it a few times to make any advance upstream. Not comfortable at all.

One of the passenger cruisers past us going down stream, made for a bumpy ride as they past.

Lesson learned. ;)

ok I've retracted the post becuase the imbeciles who weren't there know better than me

As one of the posters you branded as an imbecile I feel it appropriate to reply.

Yes you are correct in that we were not there, but you did yoursself no favours making a statement and then publishing a picture to back it up, only it didn't.

If you feel the need to insult fellow boaters and posters just becuase they don't agree with you may I suggest you take yourself off to the lounge where you will fit right in.

So whats going on this weekend.............

SarahT will be one of the the boats hosting the "Valient Club" on Sunday, basically taking a few special kids for quick run down the river and back for tea.
Looking at the weather forecast, suspect we will be going "up" more likely than not.Giving 25 mph at Sheerness at the weekend.

Perfect!

I could quant from the moorings to the mouth of T&K .... Drift on the red stream all the way to Tedders -and then call the Mlines Crew to tow me back!

At least there will be loads of water :D

Now there is no need to resort to insults because you said something that clearly wasnt true and posted a picture that backed up the fact that it clearly wasnt true.

Yes I empathise with the faster mobo's because, like myself (not necessarily on here by the way) they take a lot of stick from the likes of you who clearly know nothing about their boats and how they behave.

If you dont want people to comment on your posts and the incorrect information that you are posting then dont bother writing them and publishing them in the first place. Or at least make sure that if you are going to post something and back it up with a picture that what you are claiming and what os being shown actually tie up.

Your error so stop insulting those who point it out.

Whenever the topic of speed and wash issues crops up, I just know there is going to be an exchange of views I will find both predictable and depressing.

Attempts to precisely quantify either speed or wash, by casual observers, is a complete waste of time. All that matters is whether a boat is clearly travelling too fast and/or creating excessive wash - in either case likely to be to the discomfort of other river users. The perpetrators usually know they are guilty.

i understand the EA are looking to make use of speed camera technology soon and are likely to be looking for early opportunities to secure prosecutions and get the message out there that peeps are expected to behave reasonably.

It matters not how many river patrols there are - they will rarely be in the right place at the right time. For me the issue is one of anti-social behaviour.

Agreed.

It is a shame the picture in question has been removed because again I would say that the boat on the picture was creating an acceptable level of wash given the width of the river at that point.

The boat that was infront was obviously creating far too much wash given the state of the river.
