Preamble:
I collected some net round the prop on the way to Alderney which killed the engine, started and engaged reverse then forward which allowed me to get to Alderney (not a breath of wind).
I anchored in the bay and on going into reverse to set the anchor the engine cut again.

I arranged with the HM to go into the inner harbour to dry out and with Mainbrace to tow me in. In the meantime I snorkelled down and got some of the net off, which then gave me propulsion again. Mainbrace man then turned up but I accepted the tow in anyway.

He put me nicely against the wall and I waited to dry. An hour or so later the Mainbrace man shouted up saying he had cleared the prop and taken a few barnacles off as well, I was surprised and asked how much would it cost, he said “Oh! Less than an hour”.

My daughter went off to pay as I was otherwise engaged under the boat. When she got back the Bill was for £37.50 - £12.50 for the tow in and £25 (1 hr) labour for clearing the prop even though it was only a ten minute job.

Question:
I went and complained and we settled on one hour total - £25 leaving with not very good feeling.
Was I right to complain, should I have argued to just pay the £12.50, or should I have just accepted the bill and paid up?

In the over regulated mainland UK Andark Diving would have sent a team of 4 people in order to comply with Health and Safety regulations. Their bill would have been closer to £140 plus towing costs.

Even so you did all of us yachties a favour by haggling.

Nobody has money to burn and we all know the upkeep costs of our boats.......but....
a tow in...........£12-50........=diesel....man-hours, wear and tear on boat, insurance etc........
Whether he walked from his workshop or drove or biked.......25 quid for a man to go and clear your fouled prop is nothing.......you really are a tight-arse and should be ashamed for haggling (along with Jonjo for being in agreement)..........as you said.......anywhere else £100-140 squids and he charged £37.50......... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

No.

You asked the forum for support for your actions. I wonder if you asked mainbrayce for the price before you accepted their support.

You agree that they worked for over an hour and charged you for less, and then you wanted the tow thrown in for free. You were bang out of order and if they weren't so nice at mainbrayce, you could look forward to resolving any future problems on your own there.

£37.50, seriously?

(Not the answer you wanted, but you did ask.)

Compare what you were charged to what is asked for by other trades such as electricians, garages, etc
Suggest your rebate is sent as a donation to the local lifeboat.

You didn't say if you wanted mainbrace to clear your prop for you or not - or asked him to do it. I wouldn't expect to pay for a tow and then labour for the time of the tow, I'd expect the labour cost to be built into the price of the tow. £25/hr for labour sounds about right, but I'd be very supprised if it took 1hr to clear a prop - was he really standing around your prop for an hour?

Honest answer - I thought his bill was fair..... considering that it appears you were not too clear on agreed work. He could have stung you a lot more than that. I think he did you a favour and he will be reluctant to do another ...

Example .......... I had an engine refuse to start in Newport .... engineer came on board, checked and refitted leads to starter .... engine started. He spent about 30 - 40 mins. He got pretty mucky while doing it. It was a sunday ..... Bill was £40 incl VAT.

I thought at time - blimey thats steep ...... but then thought about it and realised that I paid minimum fee .... despite being a sunday. My engine was working - I knew what to look for if it happened again etc.

Have you checked out the hourly rates at a main dealer for your car? Close to a hundred quid an hour for the premium marques.

Tut tut.

Sorry Nige I am with the rest.

If you had decided not to take the tow and made your own way in etc after he had come out to you I would have thought 20 for his trouble would have been about right.

If someone else had towed you in and helped you I would have though dinner.

Broken down mobo in Poole harbour called out a commercial towing service to get them 200 yds, and it happened to be based where they were going, - 120 squid.

personally however if you had given me a ring I would have run over from Poole Sunday, towed you in etc for a pint - but these guys are in business and most need them to stay that way.

Just asking, but are you that tight that you squeak when you have a sh*t?

In your profile, it doesn't say how you earn your crust. But just as a comparison, what is your hourly rate?

Duncan .... I agree ....

So why Sorry Nige ????

I did say that his bill was fair ... that in fact it could have been higher ....

I think they got a good deal - particularly in light of many marine deals !!!

Firstly Mainbrace used to be owned and run by Rolland, a keen sailor. He also ran the water Taxi. Rolland sold up after sadly losing his wife. I believe the current owners of the Water Taxi & Mainbrace are more commercially minded and need to finance their operation mostly from the summer season.

I think the charge reasonable if you asked them to do it. I think the charge still reasonable if they thought they would be helpful and just "do it". I am used to paying £60 to £80 for people just to give me an estimate for certain work these days - especially in London - let alone the cost of doing the work!

After my first season sailing a big boat I considered a diving course necessary. Never cross the channel without diving gear on board now. Two fishing nets so far this year.
