A friend of mine is off bluewater this spring in his Pilot Countess 33. Nice boat with decent sized saloon - fitted 7 of us in comfortably this winter as we snugged round his taylors heater!

Don't know why, but not really a boat for me though?

I might go and see this boat - As you say, you need to see a few to get an idea about relative build quality and price.

What's the difference between the 40 and 42? Is it just LOA is 42ft instead of 40?

The 42 is the same hull as the 40, but with a short stailess bowsprit giving is a cutter rig, which is a plus point, however it makes the decks very cluttered with extra gear. I think if I was off on serious round the world stuff, rather than med livabord - then cutter would be sensible.

Center cokpit height is raised to allow for walk-thru to stern cabin. This results in not quite full headroom in doghouse, and leads to a more cramped layout below.

I did not like the layout of this boat, although it would work for 2 people only on board.

I really get pissed off when a boat is put up for sale in such an awful state (I looked at it in November) when you find basic things like winches have clearly not been greased- you begin to wonder what they did service. Probably adopted usual brit method of - if its broken - mend it, but otherwise don't bother to check it!

One or 2 in Med for sale - can be cheap to get to, and you will get a better deal than UK.

Also try Holland - good yacht brokers - speak the lingo etc, much better value than UK. Also use a dutch surveyor as he will know how the standard dutch contract proceedure works.

We decided four years ago to sell up and sail in four years time. Whilst that seemed an eternity then, I am appalled that we leave in just four months time and there is still so much to do.

I shared your concerns about the weight and sail area of teh Warrior but my lady fell in love with it and so I just tagged along hoping it would be alright.

I the four years we have had her we have sailed to Spain, Ireland (Dingle, Sneem, Adrgroom, Valentia and others round to Baltimore), France (countless harbours between South Brittany adn Calais), Belgium, and Holland as far as teh Friesian Islands. All this done whilst in full time employment.

The Warrior is not particularly quick but we have a 150% genoa and a cruising chute for off wind work and we are just fitting a removeable inner forestay on which we'll fly piston hanked sails for heavy windward work.

Of the 205 Warrior 35s built the vast majority are scattered around the world, this being a testament more to their comfort than their speed.

The subject of the aft cabin is more easily dealt with. At overall lengths of less than, say, 42 feet the space required for access to the aft cabin via a walk through makes for a very high cockpit. The movement in teh cockpit increases in heavy seas the further above the waterline you go and boats like the Countess 37 appear to me to be cumbersome in teh extreme. At 42 ft the walk through starts to work and by teh time you are at 50+ feet the proportions look fine.

Cartainly your guests have to brave the elements each time they leave their cabin for teh saloon or heads but much of the time they need to make that trip we are anchored or moored with a cover up.

The Challenger 35 (same hull with aft cockpit) is a fine craft too.... and surprisingly roomy.....

To suggest something totally different, which I admit I've only sailed once, how about the Rossiter Curlew? I was impressed in a force 3. I believe it's available in sloop, cutter or centre-cockpit ketch, with various keel configurations. Roomy and bulletproof with definitely more than adequate performance was my impression.
