Christ Knows!!!!!

Its manual, and its got the extra lever for 4WD Hi/Lo gear selection. As for Hubs, i think they are automatic, as i can't change them manually.

Ok, so this is what i've found on the web, Its Got:
Limited-Slip Differential
5-Speed Manual Gearbox
Selectable 4WD with High and Low Ratios
Automatic Freewheel Hubs

Just had a alloy repaired polished and ballanced for my X5 265/19/35, for £80+vat. This included the removal and ballance of the tyre .Why put the spare on yourself? They are not exactly looking for your future business are they? Dave.

according to the specs on the Nissan site here it's a part time 4wd system. So if they are using the standard terminology, where part time 4wd means off road only, you should definitely not be using 4wd while on normal roads, or you will definitely get wind up, and you'll totally bugger it.

I am 100% behind BarryH - especially approaching bars..... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Sounds like a failure of the central diff which should be there to prevent this issue. You are only going to get away with (or want) this locked when the road conditions permit (or you are trying to prevent) individual wheels giving.
Although I have permenant 4x4 on the Lancruiser I can create the symptoms you are describing by locking the centre diff in dry conditions. I wouldn't lock it at all in anything but the most horendous road conditions - 3 times I remember in 8 years.
Good luck.

Permanent 4wd ?? Apart from slippery conditions I never use 4x4 on my Landcruiser. Fuel consumption is better with 2wd. Hi ratio 4x4 is useful when crossing fields or icy roads and Low ratio when pulling out of a slipway. If the slipway is really slippery then I put on the manual diff lock. I NEVER tow on the road in 4x4.

Ali - you should have bort a proper /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif 4x4, not the hairdressers version !!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Just been out to the car and had a look at the gear knobs and it says
H, HL & LL
a dig through the manual says
H = high speed
HL = High speed - centre diff locked
LL = Low speed - centre diff locked

I was told by the Toyota Dealer Salesman that H was 2wd - but the manual makes NO reference to either 4 or 2. so I reckon your right. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Illusions shattered and high MPG explained. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif. The light on the dash is not then a 4wd signal but a centre diff lock signal. Isnt it funny how simple assumptions can multpily. Never even thought to question it. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

So in H mode any wheel can spin
With the centre diff locked - equal torque is applied to the front and back wheels so as long as only one wheel is spinning the opposite pair will get the power. If the situation occurs when opposite wheels spin ie front offside and rear nearside, then the centre diff is no use. The option of using the REAR diff lock will then put power to the non spinning rear wheel giving traction.

It amazing what you can learn on here !!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Not sure what you mean by rear diff lock..........?

If you mean the button down below th esteering wheel on the right that locks BOTH axle diffs so all 4 wheels spin at same speed regardless - on a dry road you can wear out your tyres in 5 minutes!

The manaul suggests that the button under the steering wheel only locks the REAR wheels not all 4. you are right that it would wear tyres in seconds. I only use this in Low ratio.
