wanted port solent berth

My feelings exactly... especially if you are a sailor. Mobo's shorten the time out and back in!

Also the locals flood the place on a friday and saturday so it can be difficult to get places in the restaurants if you havent booked. There is certainly no special treatment for the sailors!

I think it has got slightly better since Gunwharf opened as most people in Pompey go out there now instead of Port Solent.

I feel sorry for you. My weekend lasts longer than two hours, in fact its tends to be about two days coming down on a Friday night to Port Solent and going home Monday morning after a slap up meal in Mermaid Pub on Sunday evening to celebrate my sailing achievements and failures.

It is all a matter of timing. Avoid the weekend Sunsail brigade departure and return timetable. Take advantage of the active and friendly Port Solent Yacht Club for £ 18 per year. Anyway how long does it take get out to the solent from Swanwick Marina, Chichester Marina, or wait for the tide out of Bembridge Harbour ? Since when is the destination more important than the journey ?

Yes Gun Wharf has seen a reduction in socialising at Port Solent. Three shop fronts closed and up for lease in the last couple of months. But when everyone else has been holed up on the berth this winter due to bad weather, we have been comfortably watching the latest holywood movie at the multi-screen cinema next to Port Solent. For a family crew the location makes sense.

We own a third share in a sub-let berth at Port Solent that costs us personally less than £ 1000 per year. So maybe the extra yards out of the marina to the harbour entrance are more than made up in the bar at Cowes ?

Tempted ? Then do what we did. Walk around to every waterside property in Port Solent and put a flyer through the each front door expressing an interest in any unwanted pontoon berth they might own, indicating your price.

Its a buyers market at the moment.

I have run a yacht from Port Solent, and its both good and bad. Its true that the lock can create a longish wait, but not necessarily because of Sunsail, who keep a lot of their yachts outside the lock. Its not that far up the channel to Port Solent, and we enjoyed the run up after the rush through the entrance.

its a good marina, good and friendly, and easy to reach by car, which is more than you can say for Gosport!!

As a Premier berth holder else where, P/Solent in my opinion is the worst place in their portfolio. The lock staff are rude, the queues can be horrendous and the noise from the motorway is so loud you sometimes feel like you are parked on the hard shoulder. Had my wallet stolen from the showers and staff said well what do you expect. Chichester or Southsea, in my opinion Southsea is by far the best this side of Newton Ferries.

We moved the club boat from Port Solent to Gosport (Haslar) and the trip from NW London was only 20 mins longer. It's right by the sea and no queues!

Hythe & Lymington further? Depends where you start from.

I thought a lot about Christchurch and weighed up distances. I compromised by moving down here! Now I live 5 mins from the boat and 10 mins more to the sea!

Private berths in PS (i.e. outside houses) can't be sub-let; they can only be used by owner or tenant of house. The reasons relate both to sanitary arrangements and to the issue of knowing the insurance status of boats in the marina. The "remote berths" - the berths in between blocks of houses - can only be let to people with a house elsewhere in Port Solent. There used to be loads of sub-letting, but Premier and the management company (POSOL) have now clamped down on this so boats are being kicked out from sub-let berths. Of course, if you have a house in PS there is no problem.
