i am shocked. £240 for only half an hour in the slings of the crane then £99 for every hour after, then they have the cheek to want £70 for a jetwash if i want that, yeah... right

Unfortunatley not enough room to take off the old coupling while in the water, so need to get it lifted to slide the shaft back further i think (never removed or slid the shaft back before so hopefully it does)

I knew there was a reason I removed my boat from UK !!

Definitely shop around .......

I paid 80 Euros for lift out by sling .. sat half the day in slings ... repaired through hulls ... returned to water ...

OK - yard said that they were quiet that day and usually if sling unit is needed for other boat - then I would pay separately for lift in ...

Latvia prices ... !!

Your not buying time. You are buying labour and the use of a very expensive bit of lifting machinery that needs maintaining, insurance inspections, insurance and fuel. Seems about right to me. It would cost you double to hire your own crane

Ask about last lift out and first lift in leaving it over night in the slings, you may find you can get that time fro much less.
How urgent is this, is the old one is still working can it wait to the end of the season?

How will being out of the water help you to slide the shaft back further? Is it so you can remove the rudder?

Appart from the rust, what is wrong with the existing one? Suggest you replace it next time you come out.

the old coupling came loose about 2 weeks ago, tightened it more as much as possible but think its lost as much clamping force due to age. No keyway in shaft so its just a clamp type of coupler, just like the new R&D coupler i got but has 4 bolts indead of two. And being out the water means i can slide the shaft back further into the packing gland or remove if needed to get enough room to remove the old

If you want to dryb out against a wall then the wall alongside Medway Yacht Club car/boat park can be used - it is not their wall, so it is free. If you tuck into the corner where the steps protrude out it is firmer and less muddy.

The alternatives are:
1, To ask Medway Yacht Club if you can use their scrubbing trolley, there will be a fee but not as expensive as MDL.
2. To ask Hoo Ness Yacht Club if you can use one of their 2 concrete scrubbing pads either side of their jetty. You will probably need a spring tide to access though. Small fee only.

I have just been lifted out for an insurance survey in Empuriabrava. Pour a gin and sit down.
€120 for the lift EACH WAY
€195 for the jet wash which I didn't want as the A/F was only two months old
€35 to shore up
€64 for four days parking as they unilaterally decided to take a public holiday on the day the original lift was booked
All +IVA at 21%
And, to add insult to injury, the boat was filthy when I got it back in the water!

Don't feel too hard done by!

thats robbery, a jetwash is hardly difficult thats why i have my own jetwash. Just dont understand the logic of charging for them, maybe £10 for the water/electric used. the medway yacht club wall, would it be ok for a lifting keel boat?

thank you, I will give those a look into but think I will now try the "move engine forward" option first.

I know, but they're the only game in town for sailing boats and they won't let you wash it yourself. This has all come about since the Capitanerie took over the yard. On top of that I had to re-antifoul it!

You can slide the shaft back as for as the gland whilst in the water, why do you need to lift it?
In the water, I think I'd reduce that by the width of a jubilee clip. I'd feel a bit of an idiot if the shaft stuck on the last bit and the extra force needed to get it moving sent it out of reach into the gland...

Even if it didn't let the water in, you'd be a bit stuck.
