As said before we also have just had a great season in The Pond as it is fondly called by the locals.

Richard at Bedwells coulden't have been more helpful & when required did some super engineering on our dear old Snappy.

Couple of weeks back we discussed what was the biggest boat the Basin could accommodate & I was really surprised so if in doubt contact Richard & ask.

Stu, is your avatar Smeaton's Tower on Plymouth Hoe, if so what's the link?

Spent my formative years in Plymouth; that's why I didn't join the navy!

Hi Nortada,

Born and bred Janner :)

Left Plymouth for the big city in 1989, would love to go back and take my little boat with me.

What about yourself?

Another one here who spent a number of formative years in Plymuff!

I did take the boat back about 4 years ago.... its changed.... Sutton harbour is now v. posh, rather than full of run down fishing boats.. the Barbican is full of wine bars rather than pissed up mateloes.... but Captain Jaspers is still going strong!

Sutton was the most expensive place we visited this year. On the other hand, you get free coffee, and free croissants on Saturday.

We got out before a "concert" on the Hoe that was going to be audible in Noss Mayo.

Plymouthian Yes, Janner No

Hi Nortada,

Born and bred Janner :)

What about yourself?

My family goes back generations in the city - in the Sutton area, close to Charles Church, to be exact.

But, because of that nice Mr Hitler, the decision was taken that I should be born in Cardiff but NO unlike the other half I AM NOT WELSH.

Probably a good decision because the house I would have been in took a hit of 144 incendiary bombs (the box failed to open on leaving the aircraft - so much for German workmanship).

Many in Plymouth & elsewhere still hold it was a great pity I wasn't in residence that night.

Having lived along the RN, at 16 I took myself off to become a Trenchard's Boy - or RAF Brat as we were known & was never posted to Mount Batten.

So, although Plymouth blood courses through my veins & all these years later I still have a Plymouth accent, I am not a Janner.:(

If you had grown up there today I expect you would have been one of the lads we saw tombstoning from the ramparts, narrowly missing a submerged rock. It was unpleasant to watch and I decided not to photograph them. However, the Navy needs people like them.

When I was there the trick was to dive off the road into Ladies Pool along side the main swimming pool. 40/50 feet into about 7/8 get of water surrounded by rocks.

Me - too much imagination or not big enough balls!

That's why I joined the airforce. Not so many rocks at 40,000ft.

Continuing the thread drift, I would like to apply for membership of the East Coast exiled janner's club as I was born in Devonport. :)

Janners Abroad?

Although my blood is pure Janner, I wasn't born within the sound of St Andrews so am I or am I not a Janner?

To return to Thread, possibly we should ask The Walton Yacht Basin to erect as sign - ALL JANNERS WELCOME today Walton tomorrow the world!

Lived and worked in Plymouth for nearly 4 years (civilian not military) but not born there so can't call myself a Janner.

We did live in Swilly for a few months when we moved there does that carry points?

Still retain links and affection for place and try to get down there when I can.

Point of order... Plymouth is the Wrong side of the Tamar for any of you to be called a Janner...

The Cornishman trying to keep the English in order... I did live and work in Plymouth (ran Laira Depot ops during the 78 redevelopment) from 75-81...

Might be wrong but believe Janners are from God's County's side of the Tamer.

Hence that well known Devon expression, "Cor bu**er I Janner!" To express amazement in the unlikely event of a Cornishman putting his hand in his pocket, rather than yours.

Believe The Cornish are known as Tinners on account that they spend much of their time underground. In tin mines that is - not as cleaners on the Northern Line.

I would regale you with some of their truly fruity expressions, used on the rugby field but unfortunately I am not one of the 200 or so that speak Kernow.:D

Definitons of a Cornishman, casting no aspersions on the charcteristics of other groups at all...

1. A Yorkshireman with the generosity removed
2. The only person that can buy from a Jew and sell to a Scot at a profit
3. The only person that can enter a revolving door behind you and come out in front

We went to the East Coast Old Gaffers AGM held at the W&FYC on Saturday; the food was brilliant! We had "chicken ballantine stuffed with spinach and ricotta wrapped in bacon, garlic and parsley cream served with new potatoes and vegetables", which included some red cabbage cooked in something, tasted really good, and a dessert of "home-made Bread and butter pudding served with cream", the bread and butter pudding was even better, excellent. If this is the standard from the new caterers I hope they stick around, and we've discussed joining on the strength of the food served.
