Walton Backwaters and trip to Titshmarsh 2022

I haven’t been out yet as I only launched this week but things haven’t changed much in the last couple of years, so I don’t think you need worry too much, though it may pay to wait for a little more water on the way in, just in case.

Good afternoon all,

We are planning a trip to the lovely Walton Backwaters for the end of this month. Are the sands still as below? Have the buoys been moved this year?

Same method? After half tide, in we whoosh (2m draft)?
If you follow the buoys and not the chart, you'll be fine. Don't go too close to No 12 or No 14; it gets shallow very quickly to the north of them. The chart gives you the layout of the buoys, and as long as you follow the buoys, they're repositioned as needed. At 2m you should be fine more than an hour or maybe an hour and a half away from low water. At half tide or higher, you'll have plenty of depth.

I just came in past stone point following the buoys and calculated a depth at CD of 1.0m

PS. I used Walton tides to get the predicted height and the Harwich tide gauge showed on prediction. It was 2.5 hours after LW when I came in and the depth was 3.2m

I made it similar. Came in on neaps at low water (1.4) and had least depth 0.9 drawing 1.4. Don’t get too near the red buoys after the NCMB practically aim for the green.

Thanks AP - still one of my half tide ports.

Peter.
With a draft of around 1.6m, I can get through an hour either side of low water. At neaps I can probably get through at low water, but it's a bit scary! Low water tends to be well above chart datum, so it's very rare for there to be as little water as the chart shows. I've only seen the drying areas exposed once or twice, and never to the extent charted.

The main thing is not to get too close to 12 and 14, and don't be tempted to cut corners. At low water I've seen a yacht ground while nominally in the channel - of course a) the buoys may be quite a long way from their charted position at low water and b) it gets shallow VERY quickly north of them. I allow about a boat length clearance at least .

I came through dead on LW Springs a couple of weeks ago and the lowest on the depth was 1.4m in the marked channel - a bit too close for comfort!
