Walt Murry wind vane

I've down loaded all the files to start making the walt murry wind vane.

The first problem I've hit is that I can't find a supplier of the schedule 40 2" pvc pipe that is the main stay of the project. My standard trawl of B and Q and local building merchants have not helped. It is the t peice for the vane carrier and the reducers for the vane mount that is the problem.

Have anyone made one of there? Where did you source the bits?

Deleted previous post - Schedule 40 (US) pvc pipe has a wall thickness of nearly 4mm, you will have to go to speciallist plumbers for this , sorry !!!

Further edit - you might try pipestock.com , worth a ring ?

I have looked at these in the past and I think ducting rather than piping may be the way to go.

Much of the ducting used in this country, and presumably the uk, in indusrtial/electrical/gas installations are very strong and more impact resistant than general waste pipes.

Good builder/contractors suppliers rather than diy outlets.

But be aware that some of this stuff is meant to be burried and is not uv light proof so it may need to be painted, or covered with self adhesive film.

Let us know if you make the vane and how it works out.

Normal plumbers shop is the place to shop. No need to build exactly to Walters specs, use them more as a guide and use what ever is available locally and what suits your skills. I have started on one of his designs. For the vane carrier I used a bronze 2" T piece that was laying about which screws onto 2"PVC pipe. Pressure PVC pipe is what the stuff is called in this country and its what you need there too.

I too am making a Walt Murry windvane with a Jan alkema UPSD vane, after much searching and looking into USA pipe specifications schedual 40 is the same as our PVC high pressure pipe used in industry I found the english equivilent to schedual 40 pipe here local to where I live in S Devon at a place local to me I have included a link for you http://www.teignflex.co.uk/.
