However it would not be impossible to make some suitable mounting plates from some flat brass then mount them on spacers to allow clearance underneath. They came in handed pairs, one to fit each side of the boat, on the side decks normally not the rail, partly to keep, the register as low as possible.

If necessary I could post photos and dimensions of the original shoes as I do have a spare pair.

The outrigger bar is a different matter though. It is not normally detached from the register.

There was a sling pattern though for mounting on the rail but I do not have any info on that. If yours does not have the outrigger attached it was probably the sling type.

So you didn't know how to use it, then. Never had any problems, provided that one pulled it in quickly and let the hooked end trail in the water to let it straighten out.

Mind you, always remember to hand it before entering harbour. Too easy to go astern and get it in the prop!
 
Thanks for that, My log does have a chrome sling that I have been using to attach to the rail , not having any manual etc I thought that from other photos I was missing the mentioned bits. My son tells me to throw it away and go electric, but I notice he checks the distance run on the GPS against it.
 
30 years ago when I started cruising, there were lots of different logs available. PBO did some testing of various makes and I recall that they used the Walker log as the reference. I can confirm the importance of taking in the log before entering harbour, or any other reverseing, also do not turn sharply after passing a bouy, this can also cause you to lose your spinner. Then of cause there is the question of sea weed.

However they are all ways good to carry as a backup.
