Just wondering what the panel though on the console rib, the lightweight rib?

The old avon "wet bum maker" has to go, it gets onto the plane with Mrs G and me with an 8 hp 2 stroke yamaha, would the WB or would it need a bigger donk?

A number of members have them and are very pleased. A search should tell you all you need to know. In fact I'm thinking of getting one myself.

I had one in 2009. Lovely machine. Ultra light, but very cleverly engineered so it was still a good boat despite the lightweight plastics. I had the 3.4m deluxy console job with a Yam40. TBH, the 40 was a bit over the top and it might make a lot more sense to save weight and get a 25 with hydraulic trim. It would still go fast when you want to, and would make a perfectly fine passenger-carrying tender

Thanks for that JFM, I think we will go for ine but maybe not with an engine quite as big as you had on yours!! :)

With two teenage daughters champing at the bit to get it sorted there'll be enough troublewith a 15 or 20 on the back

Yup, I'd freely admit that engine was daft. The thing was quite scary at WOT and I probably did less than a minute of WOT in the entire time I had the boat. People used to look at it on the dock or the beach and you could read "WTF" on their faces. So get the high hp out of your system vicariously through me, and settle for 20/25hp :). If I were speccing the Sq58 again I'd have the same Walker Bay but a 25hp yam. Also, if you want to manage the weight then Walker Bay do the same style RIB in a 3.10m size, and they also do a "console light" version of both sizes. They're all the lightest things in their class

Hurricane got a hypalon one. When I ordered mine the delay for hypalon was too long so with trepidation i ordered PVC, which was in stock, £800 cheaper. Looking back, the PVC was fab. It didn't feel like PVC; it felt like proper thick RIB fabric, and I had no problems with it in the sun or anything. So if I were you I'd get the PVC and save the money

They all have little wheels hidden in the transom, and when you get to a slipway you can wheel it up using the bow handle, like a wheelbarrow. I did this many times and it was easy even with the 40 yam. Very nice little feature.

PVC twill be

and the lightweight one, the console light as the davits are rated at 100 Kilo's!!

I'll prob have a cover for it as well but I can't see the UK sunshine eating it too quickly!

The Honda BF20 would be an ideal choice for one of these. Lightest in its class by far (46.5KG) and 20HP would make a fun but manageable combination.

As an aside anecdote, although the 3.1 and 3.4 genesis console ribs were beautifully designed to minimise weight without feeling rubbish, the next series up of W'Bays (called "Generation" ribs, 3.9 and 4.3m) are ridiculously heavy. They're made from GRP rather than the polypropylene (like Topper dinghy) used in the Genesis range, and W'Bay plainly couldn't control the weight when they switched to GRP. So I very much avoided them when buying a 4.1m ish tender for the Sq78, and have bought an Avon instead (se400dl + Yam 50).

Agreed. Then two people could drag the whole thing up a beach and three could lift it clear, even with battery and fuel. Honda = pretty indestructible outboards too.

It would be nice to have hydraulic trim, when approaching beaches etc. Dunno if Honda do that on the BF20?

The fact that W'Bay takes a short shaft outboard saves 5 or 6 kilos too, btw

4 strokes, two strokes

given this day and age it has to be a 4 stroke I know, so the collection in the shed is growing 2 outboards now the yam 8 and the tohatsu (brilliant did all the carribean, sank it, never failed.

Just the weight of the four strokes but at least I don't have to take it off the dinghy and do the jetty wobble taking it off to stow it!

Just noticed this after posting on another thread here http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=251429&page=2

Like jfm, ours is the 3.4 with a Yam 40 on it
In its third season now - and still going strong - nothing broken - very useful RIB.
No RIB of this size is perfect - there's always a compramise - but this one gets prety close to perfection.

Hi Ian,
Just my tuppence worth but the 340 is the nicest WBay but big and heavy and expensive in comarison.

The 310 carries less peeps than the 270 as the console wastes space.

The 270 is actually bigger around 285 with very large tubes. Planing with two onboard requires 10Hp 2 stroke (yes you can still get them Merc, Mariner or Yamaha) on the 270 although passenger trimming will allow to plane with a Yam 8Hp. Ideal is a 15 imho as it gives the most power in a unit that is the same size and weight as a 10 Hp. The 270 can be carried up a beach by a couple and is also a stable platform for transporting guests that are not dinghy friendly. (you know the kind that stand on the gunwhale)

The air ducting cathedral hull makes it plane early, but also keeps it stable at rest. The negative is it can be a bit slammy in a head breeze and it also limits top speed but still 15Hp should give you about 22-25 knots! ;)

So for your boat my vote is the 270 all day long.

Good luck!

The teenage daughters and Mrs G want a steering wheel!!!

So I guess it's the 310

Ian
Just be aware of the weight differences.

Console 310DLX - 101KG
340FTD - 62KG
270FTL - 50KG

A 340FTD with 20HP Honda weighs 108.5KG (dry) which is light enough for 2 to drag up a beach, provide bags of space and enough speed. All IMHO of course.

We are a Walker Bay dealer and currently have available a brand new and unused 310 in stock at our office in Swanwick.

We also have a 2005 Mercury 15 2-Stroke, shown in the attached picture, which can be packaged with the boat.

Sorry if this is considered to be an advert but I though it may be of genuine interest to someone looking for a lightweight tender package.

It looks indeed nice as a skiboat. Out of curiosity, is it powerful enough to pull a skier out of the water with the monoski alone?
I can't use my double shoe monoski with my tender 'cause it's not powerful enough, and I'd love to have one which can handle that.

It's borderline Mapis. I had the efi version of Hurric's engine (Hurric's is carb) and that struggled. I put a finer prop on than the standard yamaha dealer-supplied one, and it would do it, but for the skier (=me) it is quite a slow climb out of the water and your arms are pretty tired at that point. Nothing like the quick pop out that 250hp would give you.

Talking of tenders, this pic is from mby's genoa show gallery. Looks like you have to build the tender each time you want to use it. What a mess!
