No really. Maist o the fowk in thae castles were educated at Eton , Harrow or Winchester.

Actually Julian Fellowes, the author of Gosford Park and Downton Abbey is also an actor, who was called on to play the role of Lord Kilwillie (snigger) in Monarch of the Glen. When he asked whether he would need a dialogue coach he was assured that all the gentry spoke just like him.

Ah well, if you can find a wee tea shoppie open in these parts, the proprietors may be native. Though I am not sure of which country they are native. Possibly a wide knowledge of languages like Urdu, Swahili or whatever they speak in Essex may be required.

True story. I worked a summer in Scotland erecting log Cabins just for the experience of gallivanting around the highlands every weekend exploring. Which was wonderful.
In a pub on my first free Friday night I ordered a pint of Irn Bru at the bar , thinking it sounds like a pint of something really good, heavy and strong. Cheers😂

Ah hope them skelligs pointed yw doon ra right wee lane, an' that ye found ra Irn Bru mines doon at ra far end. It's no' every 'conflict tourist' gets tae see them these days, efter ra bad publicity in yon 'Braveheart' fillum.

It's no' supposed to wurk like the Breton 'potion' in ra Asterix comix, an' should be mixed 50:50 wi' good ol' Lanliq fur a right proper wee bevvy.

Sort of reminded me of being in scortland in the late 60s; Visited 'something' House, were the Dalai Lama was residing, as not wanted 'back home' at that time..
B cold and the locals were not terribly friendly.. Spoke some dialect, esp when with Southeners..present.
Has it improved?

The Dalai Lama has never lived in Scotland, although visited many times. In the late 60's the Samye Ling monastery opened in the borders. Now there are a few monasteries around Scotland. Holy Isle off Arran is owned by a Buddhist community and cells can be hired for contemplation and meditation; they are built into the steep sides with fantastic vistas down the Firth of Clyde.

Has Scotland improved since you visited in the late 60's? I guess that depends on your point of view, only you can decide if it has for you. It can still be cold, although the summers are getting hotter for much longer. Scots in Scotland are no different than the English in England when it comes to friendliness, or anywhere else really.

Here is a Conde Nast survey, The friendliest cities in the UK: 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards, which has 3 Scottish out of 10 UK cities, which is not bad for a country with a population around 1/10th of England.
