VP MD 11c dipstick tool

I must be doing something wrong, I change the oil on our MD11C without problems. It comes out of the dip stick hole with a little brass pump (warm) easily. I don't remember any problems getting the new oil in via the filler. It only takes about 5 pints so even if it is slow it doesn't take long. I have access to the front via the companionway steps and the back via a hatch in the cockpit floor.

If you did not have the hatch in the cockpit floor or clearance above the filler cap, filling might possibly be a bit more difficult? Only Volvo Penta would regard an oil filler position on the back of a small marine engine as acceptable, just as on mine the oil filter is on the side requiring a hatch in the engine box and almost guaranteeing skinned knuckles and oil in the pan under the engine.

Refreshing this older post with a related query.

I have recently bought a Centaur with an MD11C, and am planning the winterising activities for the first time.
I understand it is difficult to remove the oil strainer collar, as in the initial picture, without the correct tool, and perhaps even inadvisable to disturb the seal.

So I plan to drain the oil through the dipstick hole, and therefore need to buy a suitable but inexpensive pump.
I understand the oil will not syphon, it needs to be fully hot and pumped.
I feel that I dont need a large and complex vacuum pump, nor an inbuilt container.

In your view(s), will either of these do the job?, or do you recommend something else??

Thanks in advance.
J.

The boat I used to crew had an MD11 C but with a later type of strainer fitting with a square boss that could be unscrewed with a spanner. IIRC it tightened onto a fibre washer. ( well know it did I bought a new one from a plumber's merchant)

We always removed the strainer and dip stick to drain, refill or even top up with oil

If you do not remove the strainer I don't think you will get the pump suction tube to the bottom of the sump.

We used a brass hand pump. It could get messy so a good supply of rag etc is advisable .

Personally I have a Pela clone which is convenient because there is little chance of spilling any oil and it all ends up in sealable container but the one I have does not hold its vacuum properly.

You dont need the oil fully hot ( or you are likely to burn/ scold yourself) but you do need it all warmed ... no cold layer in the bottom. So best bet is to warm it up thoroughly and then let it cool a bit.

I changed my oil last weekend
Removed dipstick and strainer (it has a square boss like Vic S so easy to remove) - handbook says remove strainer
Pumped out warm oil with Pela clone - don't know exactly how much was left as engine is inclined so don't think you can ever reach the bottom?

Started to refill via the filler cap and promptly broke the electrical connection for the rev counter which is very close by, finished by filing through the rocker cover

We always drained the last of the oil out via the sump drain plug into suitable receptacle.

We always refilled via the dipstick /strainer mounting hole.
