Just bought a new 3 bladed Volvo Penta folding prop to go on my 120 Saildrive.

I’ve had a VP folding prop on a previous boat which I always painted with International Trilux due to the fact that the first season I put the prop on not painted it ate the anode away and started to eat into the saildrive leg. I believe this was a known problem with the earlier 3 bladed VP props.

My new prop has its own anode round the circumference of the hub, does this mean VP have solved there earlier problems ?. The question is do I need to paint this prop with Trilux, as it seems a shame to paint over a shinny propeller, although it will tarnish when it goes in the water, or should i paint like i normally do as I know that solves the problem.

Any advise will be greatly received.

Thanks

Prop makers usually recommend that you dont paint the prop. One stated reason is that if the paint scratches all the corrosion is focused on that one point.

There's a large amount of discussion on Volvo saildrives rotting. There's a thread on this over on the HROA website here (Topic is 'Saildrive prop--rapid zinc erosion')
