Just about to change the oil in the 5.0Gi VP,2001.

Is it ok to use Quicksilver 25w-40 oil !?!? Dont really see a reason why not but thought i'd check. Only ask as i have loads of it here, new in tubs :)

Simon

VP spec is VDS 3 for your engine, which is 15w40.

In real life probably won't make a difference, but bear in mind it's a different grade, so for the sake of some beer tokens is it worth it?

I ALWAYS use the correct spec in my and my customers boats - engines are expensive!!

Thankyou Rosssavage. Not quite what i wanted to hear :) as i have several litres of the syuff here i was wanting to use.
Engine will probably will run for 30-40 hours this season anyway before being changed again. Just wondering how bad it could get :-) Best to research me think.
Appreciate the reply tho !!!! :)

I run shell f/s auto oil in V/P v6 block, it better to change the oil more frequently that have a top notch oil and change it infrequently, if you go to the American boat/engine forums they all recommend auto oil, you pay way over the odds for v/p stuff, same as the filters ive also used carters filter, never had any issue half the price of v/p which means i can change them more frequently,

I recently had electric fuel pump go, rang v/p RK marine 220 quid:eek::eek: after some internet work found out the pumps are all made by carters, search online and a company down Southampton sold them 96 quid + postage. bargain:)

just my whingeing opinion.;)

Volvo dont make oil or filters, it's the spec that counts. Volvo just remarket them, with a few %%%% signs on top.

Mostly these days, the best oil you can get, is labled Diesel engined turbo. Also suitable for petrol engines.

Volvo have recently approved their VDS2 diesel oil for use in their petrol engines, seeing as I get this cheap through my company I now run my Mercruiser 350 Magnum on it and it seems more than happy with slightly better oil pressure when warm than before.
