VP D2-40: Valve Cleareance Adjustment & Injector Testing

Our 2006 model VP D2-40 Engine has 800 hours, starts first time and runs well. It is a bit noisier than it was a couple of years ago and sounds to me a bit 'tappety'.
The service schedule recommends adjusting the Valve Clearances and pressure testing the Injectors every 500 hours or 2 years.
The Valve Clearance appear fairly easy to adjust, but i'd need an engineer to test the Injectors.

1. Should i adjust the Valve Clearance & is it relatively easy, or should i leave well alone?

2. Should i have the Injectors tested?

Valve clearance should be checked regularly and is generally easy to do.

Injectors can generally be left a lot longer. My Disco has over 100k on the clock. At an average of 30mph that's well over 3000 hrs. If they start to go wrong there are signs, either misfiring or white smoke to let you know.

Check ther tappets if they are getting noisy, easy to do.
Leave the injectors alone. If the fuel filters have been changed regularly then they will go on for ever. Stupid idea to check them on a service basis, causes more troubles than if you leave them alone.
If you get symptoms then go ahead, but at the hours you have done, no!

just one thing to note on marine engines is that when you bar the engine over you must do it in its normal direction of rotation and don t be tempted to turn it back if you go to far, you could ruin the water pump impellor.


are you certain about that, what about the many times as the engine comes to a stop it bounces against the next compression and goes backwards a bit?.

not that I am suggesting going in the wrong way for the sake of it.
