"Voyaging on a small income"

Re: The short answer

"Now THIS is shaping up into an argument. Fight! Fight! Fight!"

No - most unofficerlike to berate the men! I'll get the warrant officer to do that! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hocifers, don't drop H's either, Bloddy Flying Officer Kite! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Now stop hi-jacking this nice mans thread, and behave yaself.

I don't know, now I have to apologise to that nice Mr. Tiggertoo, all over again, really, it's not good enough, these good people want to have an interesting and intelligent conversation about live aboard cruising and such, and what have they got? Me and you, that's what! ........poor sods! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

and no, I haven't got the thing unscrewed yet, I will next time I am on the boat, maybe tomorrow.

Re: \"Voyaging on a small income\"

Getting back on thread.
The book has to be read in context.
The Hills(now separated?)built and fitted out their boat,so tools and repair expertise were natch available,I think it could sit upright on a beach too.
They chose junk rig and the flat sails were made from acryllic, not sailcloth,so no uv degradation,no standing rigging to replace, and again repairs very straightforward using a sewing machine.
They had a very basic petrol motor.
They had no refrigeration...which is the bit that interested me when I went off in '95-99.I simply had no idea that eggs, onions, potatoes, dark bread and root vegetables could be kept for so long on a trip.
You pays yer money and you make choices!
Since at the time I had a small bilgekeeler, the figures seemed about right, though alcohol was confined to 'happy hour'and marinas were a definite nono. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: \"Voyaging on a small income\"

Just out of interest, Bilge keeler, how small?

Re: \"Voyaging on a small income\"

Blimey! respects man /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif I sold one of those to buy my Westerly Nomad.........just had to be able to stand up to put me trousers on! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Great little sailboats, but live on one? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

So come on, more details, how did you get on? where did you take her?

Re: \"Voyaging on a small income\"

It was some time ago now-Bought the boat to just go sailing/pottering for one summer and then sell it.Instead,I had acquired such confidence and enjoyment in it(her) that I refitted, made a windvane and trysail and took off on a sabbatical....Cu8t through Brittany on the canal,North Spain, worked Portugal,Canaries, worked,Cap Verdes,Windies,USA-where I modified an old trailer, took the us driving test and bought an old 'Pimp mobile' and whizzed up to Maine,New York,Chesapeake, then sold it and bought a bigger hurricane damaged boat....So all in all it was quite fun and quite inexpensive. You did ask. Not sure I am reckless enough to do it now! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sounds like you had a good time, great stuff /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Always had a bit of a soft spot for the Corribee, to my eyes, looks like a proper little yacht, if you know what I mean?

Re: \"Voyaging on a small income\"

Haveing replied to this thread i went away and looked more closely at my crusing costs i was really pleased to find that in SUMMERr i spend £320 month or £80 PW in WINTER £205 month or £51 PW!!

In the med i would spend less in summer as there are almost no places available and those that are are to expensive for me!

In the baltic there are so many good anchorages or mooreings for free its silly to pay!Though there i count 24 euros or 220SEK for two nights a month as sometimes the ports the best alternative to dry out and do the washing!

On the Atlantic as i was told there are no free places(well almost not)i was shocked this summer to have the capitains come out in a boat or by car on the river banks to collect mooreing fee and tell me i be better locked in where for the same price i had water and power!!
If that happend in English bays and rivers thered be a revolution!I imagin a capitain comeing along would get short shrift!!!

My cloths and eating out arnt included nor is antifouling repairs or insc though my insc is third party, my cloths second hand or sale, and the crane costs for my 2.5 tons £30 in and out and 2 euros a day standing!Antifoulings either free (leftovers from bin) or not expensive from an Italian club

Untill this post i thought i spent much more!!Though the more compact boat i now have is a big saveing over my old Hillyard.

We have the book, but our realistic budget in the Caribbean was between £4-800 a month.,,,,,]

Wow that must have been terribly hard to live on that....Guess you had to slum it a bit and go without the Chablis with the Thermidor on occasions ..with a budget like that you could have rented an Air-conditioned Appt..and sailed for fun on your days off and come Feb Via Excel Aiways Jetted off to do some Skiing....In Andorra or Bulgaria (Budget Skiing ) and Back to the Boat for Antigua Week ...I wish ..I had that much..I Truly do.....

Now Now Jeff!

You have to understand that some people really do not have a clue what the word budget means, to other people! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I mean, some of the folks on here post things like, " I would like to buy a boat for extended cruising in the Med, but I ONLY have £65000.00 to spend on a boat" Only £65000.00!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif FOFLMAO!.........see it all depends on what you are used to?

To ordinary working class mortals such as meself, that £65000.00 represents about 4.5 years wages! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

So very often, some of the people that post on this subject, are unable to empathise with what I mean by a budget, or even what a small income is!

They aint all siver spooners though, and a lot of them aquired what wealth they have by sheer hard robbery...ooooops! should have said work /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No ski-ing but flew home from Antigua for Hospital appointment for pregnant wife and back in time for sailing week. Never went without the Chablis or the Rioja we picked up in Spain, and lobsters were cheap. If it makes you feel better we lost £20,000 in Hurricane Ivan. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Seriously though you can cruise on as much or as little (within reason) as you have. I would and do chose the cruising life over the mortgage trap/rat race any day, no matter what my income. I used to be teriffied of losing my Job when working in London. Cruising taught me to be self reliant and creative in terms of income, and the experience of the cruising life is priceless.

Funy thing is I never did lose a job , but I did lose the bloody boat! Cheers Ivan. Don't worry I've got another one now /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
(and a job- see the trouble I'm getting into on the PBO How to sell a boat thread.)

EnPleinemer I have fond, fond memories of Antigua. The sound of tree frogs at night, espresso martinis in the skullduggery, "Apple" the water taxi guy, Joels weather on vhf 06, Jaynes Yacht services book swap, shirley heights jump up, and just staying at anchor off the dockyard for ages and ages. I WILL RETURN. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Very true.

"Well said you."

Ta.

Cheers all- raises glass of wine.

To ordinary working class mortals such as meself, that £65000.00 represents about 4.5 years wages!

In Europe £1200 a month is a top salary!Only local bankmanager Doctors and plumbers earn that sort of money! The "workers" for example car workers mechanics shop assistents still get around £600 a month!!

Im saying this becouse with the euro taxes and bank charges have doubles or gone up 50% (the cost of renewing my visa card and mastercard increased and rounded up the same week the euro came in and i questioned it as price rises were forbidden?Seems tax collectors and banks wernt included.

Untill last year i thought everyone had "British" salarys given that everyone now drives a new car and sails a new boat!!! I was really amazed when i was told and shown a salary slip!!!!!Later there was a thing in the news paper comparing salarys!!It said that the £600 salary and others are all jobs for life or as long as the company stays in business

I find the new "London" salary levels and bonuses worrying as it will in time create a new underclass A london bank worker gets £800.000pa and expects and gets at least £1.6 millon bonus and the bonus should double every year!!!Thats why sailings becomeing expensive and boats bigger!!!
