Voyage of the \'Goblin\'

No wonder poor John Walker got disoriented in the North Sea; he thought he was sailing from Pin Mill in SUFFOLK. What he should have known was that he was, in fact, setting out from Pin Mill in NORFOLK.

No doubt CB will be inundated with letters pointing out the howler in this months edition.

Tim
Pin Mill (definitely in Suffolk)

Re: Don\'t let the cat out of the bag!

Horatio, arn't you in on this one? Didn't anyone explain to you what is going on? The game is to tell everyone that Pin Mill is in Norfolk to ensure that no one else finds it and adds to the overcrowding in the B&O and shortage of moorings in the summer. Please keep the real location a secret and tell everyone it is in Norfolk :)

Psst!

Good idea!

Problem is that you potter up the Orwell hoping to get on one of Tony Ward's buoys and go to the B&O, but when you get there they are all taken so you go on up to Woolverstone Marina and pay three times more for the privilege of less privacy and a long walk!

And no giving away where Secret Water is, either!

Secret Water?

Isn't that the place just outside of Calshot? A beautifully quiet and unspoiled stretch of water, with the silence broken only by the call of the occasional seabird :)

If all of Tony Ward's moorings are taken, Jon Webb owns a few deep water moorings on the other side of the river, immediately opposite the Butt buoy. The ground tackle is sound & they're in deeper water than those on the South side of the river. Do try these rather than swelling the coffers of MDL.

Re: Secret Water?

Yes, that's the place!

I did not know that - thanks VM for the advice, which I will put into practice very shortly!

Re: dig at marinas?

I am not speaking for Horatio, but thought I would just say that it is good that companies that provide a service to the boating community also use these forums as a way on keeping in touch with customers and potential customers. I guess this is not the correct forum for discussing marinas, but in my view, I have no complaint with MDL, but I do have two major complaints about marinas in general:

1) this complaint does relate to many classic boats: I wish marinas would not charge for bowsprits! (your comments, john?)

2) I wish it was easier to get planning permission to build a new marina. Then we would have more choice, which would lead to more competition, which would lead to even better servvice, which may even lead to lower prices.

Re: Secret Water?

Only MDL is within reach of Pin Mill, at Woolverstone!

Tony Ward - Pds 6 - time to pub average 20 minutes rowing.

MDL - Pds 18 - time to pub 40 minutes walking. I grant you it is a nice walk. Plus stress factor of berthing an antique within inches of average white boats.

You no longer charge me for my bowsprit because last winter I modified it so it runs in easily.

Woolverstone used to have a very special character, but as the staff have changed over time it has lost this, sadly. Its still nice, but not the same.

Re: dig at marinas?

Not particularly a dig at MDL, although as Mirelle said, its the only marina within walking distance of the Butt (Shotley is pushing it!) However, I don't see why I shouldn't direct a fellow yachtsman to a cheaper, more convenient solution at the expense of the MDL bottom line.

I've nothing particularly against Woolverstone Marina. However, for long keeled boats with limited power it can be an awkward place of the tide's going the wrong way for the berth.

Re: Don\'t let the cat out of the bag!

No! Please don't send them all to Norfolk! There's enough in Norfolk already!

Many are wondering even as we speak how far they can get without the bother of lowering their masts (answer: Yarmouth yacht station and no further...)
