hi all .. pleasant day here in Bedfordshire so me thinks its a good time to start dismantling TM,s heat exchanger for a serious descaling !!!.... im one of those who like, and finds it much easier, to do stuff more carefully on the bench therefore doing less damage to the various worn out bodily particles of the ageing yours truly !!!!!................... HOWEVER........ to remove the said article from the side of my kad32 in the engine bay of my S24.......(having made lots of enquiries on the details of the operation) is NOT as easy as..... 1.reversing my 40ton truck into the eye of a needle without mirrors...2, picking the lotto numbers for the nxt two weeks ... or 3, juggling three high reving chainsaws ALL AT THE SAME TIME !!!!!...... some of you (im not one) have actually met Mr VP in "person"...... obviously this NOT correct because "he" is plainly not human... ONLY A TRIPLE JOINTED 12 ARMED CREATURE THE SIZE OF A SINGLE PLANKTON could get at some of those bolts !!!!!!!!!!!!..........RANT OVER !!!!!!!!!.......anyway, am trying to make a vid of the job but I keep getting blood (from skinned knuckles etc) everywhere and am having mega grief posting anything on utube at present (work in progress)............... ......................... feel better now ive let that lot out !!!....

Ha ha , when you do this job most days of the week it keeps things bendable in the human body dept . Kad 32 is easy just remove the rear bracket then slacken off the front heavier bolts , slide the cylinder back after undoing the top and bottom hose , and the two sea water hoses at the rear , 1 hour max .

Hi VP....finally got it off !! HOOOOORRRRRAAAAA...one of the rear bracket 15mm "nuts" wouldn't undo !! it came out with the stud which of course was to long so I had to slacken off the super charger air pipe bracket under the airfilter box, (inc the hidden nut under the airpipe itself) more AAAHHHH... the raw water hose on the plate that crosses the rear of the engine wouldn't come off the flange, the bottom coolant hose wouldn't cooperate either !!!... so your 1hr turned into my8 hrs !!!! more AAAHHH......BUT ..... have got the flange off and its as clean as the day it was made !!!!....which leaves me back at square 1 !!!!!.......the good thing is that it proves that my fastidious flushing regime works !!!!!............. hohum !!!!!!!

Steve,

great, so that means there was no need to spend these 8 hours and I guess .5 sqm of skin to remove them, right?
please do report on the # of hours for assembly (4h maybe?)

I doubt the heat exchangers are going to be nice and clean on mine though... One more winter job.

cheers

V.

Exhaust elbow partially blocked .

Steve, I've got one of those infra red thermometers at home if you can make use of it to find hot / cold spots on the engine

Hi G.....ta muchly.... might take you up on that offer !!!!!....... but I have to refit all the bits first so that will be awhile yet so a rain check if that's ok with you mate ...

OOOHHH POOO !!!!!.... that's thrown a spanner in the doo dahh !!!!...... if I remove it from the boat, what am I looking for inside ???? is there a flap or valve or similar to get stuck/freed off etc etc ???...... thanks in advance paul..
Look up inside the elbow, you will see the centre hole where the gas comes through, around the outside is a smaller jacket with metal tags bent over, there must be good gaps between the centre and the outside, just stab it clean with a screwdriver . As its a cast elbow it suffers quite bad.

HI all........for those who MIGHT be interested, this is a belated update of T.M,s cooling saga.......(can only do stuff at the wknds), exhaust elbow removed and examined as per VP,s suggestion, spotless !!, oilcooler,(steering??), removed, spotless !!..... hmmmmmmmm...... so prior to refitting all this stuff, inc a new impellor, I took the opportunity to flush out BOTH the raw water and antifreeze side of plumbing in BOTH directions (eg. reversed the flow) nothing unexpected came out and the through flow was unrestricted !!..... SOOOOOOO...... decided that was the most a self tort twit could do so I rebuilt the whole thing and NERVOUSLY had it running this morning !!!!...NO LEAKS !!!...NO ADVERSE NOISES !!!....OR SMELLS !!!...in other words IT WORKS !!!!!!......... ONLY thing is has it cured the prob ???, well there in lies the problem, because it looks like I cant get afloat again this year to find out !! GGRRRRRR.... but if nothing else, I,ve learnt a few things that, my flushing regime WORKS, it has a new impellor, antifreeze and about the most flushed through plumbing anywhere..so there it stands as of now................................... is it spring yet ?????
