VolvoAD41\'s

I have just bought a boat with twin volvo AD41's with approx 600hrs each. Are there any common problems with these engiones that i should look out for?

Re: VolvoAD41\'s

A Fine Engine the AQAD41A But prone to smoke,Not much you can do about that, but grin and bear the adverse comments you will receive. The advice given to me was to single up your lines before starting, and depart as quick as you can.

It was really smokey when first started, alot of white smoke but it did clear and the engines ticked over quietly @ approx 850rpm.Should the engine not be allowed to heat up before slipping the lines and putting load on it?

Re: VolvoAD41\'s

You can do this by letting them run at about 1500 in idle, but as others have said you will pretty unpopular in the marina. The best thing is to get under way and load the engines slightly to get them up to temp, we always run them at about 2000rpm once clear of the marina to get them up to temp around 80C, once you have that you know the oil is warm and you can open them up knowing that the turbos are getting adequate oil. You are correct that you should 'NEVER' run them up to full speed when cold, and the same after running at high speed NEVER just turn them off but let them idle to let the turbos spool down and cool off, this is usually achieved while motoring back into the marina.
