Here' s an interesting story of customer 'care' in the marine industry!

I bought a new Princess 40 with 2x Volvo TAMD63's fitted. Princess and Volvo pushed the fact that they were so confident with the produst that a THREE YEAR WARRANTY was available...great I thought.

Deliverd in March 2002. In the first 6 months I had little leisure time to use her due to usual pressures of work etc so after 7 months she had only amassed some 40 something hrs use. I had the Volvo agent at Hamble Point service the vessel and stamp the book accordingly. Since then she has to date only had 99 hrs total use and again has been service by Volvo a further 2 times.

Now due to a change in plans Ive decided to sell. I place her with brokers I know and trust at Hamble Point and take advantage of their shoreside display etc. Sure enough they do there job and we find a buyer. Everything progresses and we are ready for a sea trial. The buyer undertstandably has asked about the warranty and the brokers, after confirming we me, pass on that yes 3 services have actually happend under Volvo themselves and she still only has 99 hrs...wonderful we all think!!!!!

The buyer, quite undertstandably decides to ring up Volvo just to confirm that the warranty can be transferred to his name so he can enjoy some worry free cruising and.....'oh no sorry sir there appears to be a problem and you can only have the remainder of a 2 yr warranty not 3'.........'as the very first service happened 7 weeks late the 3 warranty is invalid and there is no flexibility, goodbye'.

As you can imagine the buyer gets back to the broker who in turn gets on to Volvo and then me. Apparantly, as I missed this smallest of smallpoints written within several pages of terms conditions I am at fault and nothing can be done about it! I have even enquired as to whether I can purchase another 12 months warranty in order to keep my buyer happy......but again no.

Now I am faced with a buyer who wishes to withdraw from buying my boat as Volvo has cast some doubt on the worthiness of the engines as I was 7 weeks late in the first service!!!!!

Being in the construction business I happen to have just purchsed 55 NEW VOLVO TRUCKS and feel pretty let down but a comapny that i had in the past assumed I could trust.

HELP! What can I do. am i wrong in feeling that Volvo are being rather harsh??? Apparently they now only offer a 1 or 2 yr warranty on all their engines are they trying to say something???

Yours,

ONE VERY UPSET 'soon to be former' VOLVO CUSTOMER

If you have 55 Volvo trucks you must surely have a bag of weight you can bring on to Volvo Penta via Volvo trucks. Pull some strings and if no response then there's Scania trucks next time!

Its tempting to park said 55 trucks in the Volvo Penta foyer at this moment!

Ive made it clear that I feel that maybe I am a 'valued' customer (whatever that means?) but apprently they don't seem to really be bothered...... If I ran my company like this I'd be going bust tommorow!

Try phoning your local trading standards and see what they have to say about unreasonable contract terms and unreasonable behaviour. Their advice is good and free.

Actually it's a shame your buyer is pulling out. Ok 3 years warranty is nice to have but it's not a big point in the scheme of things. Those 63Ps are solid engines and they are good as new with 99 hours, there's no way they're remotely likely to go wrong in year 3. We have those engines on our last boat, 550 hours with no problem. Can't your buyer get realistic and not pursue this non-point?

Frankly you could even warrant the engines yourself, like I say they are not gonna go wrong.....

Also, when ours got to three years old Pantaneous our insurers offered us engine breakdown cover. It was only couple hundred quid for a year. On your engines you should get warranty from them for this sort of price or even less. Would that make your buyer happy?

Your probelm here is your buyer who is getting this out of all proportion. He needs to wise up. He sounds like someone frightened to cross a road.

Good luck anyway

Thanks guys,

Ive think you could be onto something here. ive spoken with Pantaenius who are only too happy to offer insurance/warranty for any engines less than 5 years old. As they have said they pride themselves on their good relationship with Princess and Volvo and are happy to assit in anyway possible.

A shame Volvo or Princess couldnt have the same helpful attitude???

Re:New boats.

Your post unfortunately confirms a view held hereabouts that buying a new boat is not a means to ensure pain free ownership. The problem also affects us a bit further down the buying chain ,if people are put off buying new craft where will my next boat come from.Several recent posters have complained that despite spending considerable amounts of money on new boats, their experience of sorting problems after purchase has not been good.

Re:New boats.

Princess very helpfull. But not there fault. VSplutterO have a bad reputation round these parts, for first giving useless waranties. Then making fortunes on VsplutterO oil (whatever that is) Then megga millions on VsplutterO spare parts. I know I've spent it!!
