Here' s an interesting story of customer 'care' in the marine industry!
I bought a new Princess 40 with 2x Volvo TAMD63's fitted. Princess and Volvo pushed the fact that they were so confident with the produst that a THREE YEAR WARRANTY was available...great I thought.
Deliverd in March 2002. In the first 6 months I had little leisure time to use her due to usual pressures of work etc so after 7 months she had only amassed some 40 something hrs use. I had the Volvo agent at Hamble Point service the vessel and stamp the book accordingly. Since then she has to date only had 99 hrs total use and again has been service by Volvo a further 2 times.
Now due to a change in plans Ive decided to sell. I place her with brokers I know and trust at Hamble Point and take advantage of their shoreside display etc. Sure enough they do there job and we find a buyer. Everything progresses and we are ready for a sea trial. The buyer undertstandably has asked about the warranty and the brokers, after confirming we me, pass on that yes 3 services have actually happend under Volvo themselves and she still only has 99 hrs...wonderful we all think!!!!!
The buyer, quite undertstandably decides to ring up Volvo just to confirm that the warranty can be transferred to his name so he can enjoy some worry free cruising and.....'oh no sorry sir there appears to be a problem and you can only have the remainder of a 2 yr warranty not 3'.........'as the very first service happened 7 weeks late the 3 warranty is invalid and there is no flexibility, goodbye'.
As you can imagine the buyer gets back to the broker who in turn gets on to Volvo and then me. Apparantly, as I missed this smallest of smallpoints written within several pages of terms conditions I am at fault and nothing can be done about it! I have even enquired as to whether I can purchase another 12 months warranty in order to keep my buyer happy......but again no.
Now I am faced with a buyer who wishes to withdraw from buying my boat as Volvo has cast some doubt on the worthiness of the engines as I was 7 weeks late in the first service!!!!!
Being in the construction business I happen to have just purchsed 55 NEW VOLVO TRUCKS and feel pretty let down but a comapny that i had in the past assumed I could trust.
HELP! What can I do. am i wrong in feeling that Volvo are being rather harsh??? Apparently they now only offer a 1 or 2 yr warranty on all their engines are they trying to say something???
