About to change my impellors this winter as i figure this may not have been done yet despite only 400hrs on the clock but the boat is 8 years old now. On close inspection of the cover it to the impellor housing it appears that the original green volvo engine paint has never been disturbed to the housing thus i would expect they have never been changed.
If any of you there are familiar with the tamp63 set up you know the access to lossen the screws to the impellor cover is restricted by the 2 oil filters as there is only about 4 inches of space to get your screwdriver on the heads of the screws with the filters impeeding.
I would think i would have to remove both filters to gain enough access to the screws. Has anyone every loosen the screws through another method other than removing the filters or is there a tool with a flat head screw driver fitting that may access the screws within the space . i have tried a 1/4" drive but don't have an attachment small enough to fit in the space between oil filter and cover.
Had i the change an impellor at sea/lake i feel that it may be impossible without removing the 2 oil filters.

Also has anyone every pulled a thread on loosen the screws to the cover or damged a screw head while undertaking an impellor service. would it be wise to oder a few replacements incase they don't loosen easily seeing that they appear to have never been distrubed?

They are not as dificult as they look, just remove face plate with spanner, remove inlet elbow, fill with grease, turnover a couple of times, carefully push out through inlet with screw driver (dont damage fins), I have never yet removed oil filters to get impellors out.

took mine out recently - needed to use a jabsco puller. I modified it to clear the oil filters. cut of the T bar handle and replaced it with two nuts. bit of squeeze, but it then clears oil filters operated with a socket on the end. to get the cover off I used a small socket. just be patient and it is easy enough.

We have just changed one of the impellors on our 63's and there is a special tool for pulling them out. It is a round female threaded socket that screws into the impellor and then a male nut is screwed into the housing that when you keep turninig the nut extracts the impellor out cleanly in a straight line. Unfortunately the yard did not have it in stock,(so we have ordered one) so we had to do it as Aquapower has said except we squirted fairy liquid in it and turned the engine over quickly and used swan shaped grips to pull it out with a hell of alot of grunts and pulling on the rubber flanges even ripping some of the rubber out we found eased some of the tension on it, making sure not to damage the brass inside housing.I am not saying it was easy. If I go down to the boat today i will photograph the leaflet showing you the special tool as described above, that is if your impellor has the thread to take it. Remember to change the gasket. This is the first impellor I have changed.

Thanks for the replies but i think you have missed my question as to the ease to remove the cover without removing the filters. My cover is at present secured with 6 flat head tipped screws that only a screwdriver will loosen. it is not possible to place a spanner or a wrench or rachett and socket onto these screws due to their type. ie not being a bolt.
Maybe some of you have modified the fixings for securing the cover and i would certaining consider replacing the screws with similiar bolts when i get them off.
I dont seem to figure how a srcrewdriver can be placed on the screw bolt without removing the filters. any ideas or am i missing a trick.

Are you sure that the screws haven't been changed. I can't remember any 63 impeller plates I've removed with a screwdriver not a spanner.

Anyway you can get small rightangled 1/4" bit drivers to hold a normal screwdriver bit. I would replace them with hex head bolts. Never had any problems with bolts snapping ect but never had one thats not been changed in 8 YEARS.

Some do have screws, these I undo with a stubby screwdriver, they are difficult but you still dont need to remove filters, just remember when refitting they only fit one way as the spacing of the screws is different

Screws for sure and not hex heads
i have come accross the volvo part number for the pullers that screws into the impellor so thanks for the thumps up on that.

For anyone that may like the number its 3843949 and only cost €5 so a steal and a must for the tool kit.
