Been thinking of moving to a three cabin flybridge boat, can't get anywhere near a new / nearly new one, so I've been looking at a few much older boats (1990's) with a view to doing a full refurb. Many are fitted with these engines. I'm aware that the 73 (at least) is in scope for the VP ECU spares shortage issue.

Be interested in views, good or bad, of the 72 and 73 generally.
Are they rebuildable at a sensible cost if needed? Or is it a case of repowering if an engine is u/s?

Run a mile? or solid as a rock?

Depends on the individual installation and there maintenance history’s along with use age pattern .
Spares availability esp ECUs need stronger reassurance imho .

Marine age tends to centre around corrosion of the cooling systems / exhaust……inevitably and obviously.

I understand the oily bits on those engines are durable , but then most ex land based truck blocks are .

The Bav gone then?
you know the 72A not one of my favourites.
The 73/74/75 still has the ECU stigma.
