Hi there,
Does anyone know which Volvo truck engine the TAMD63P-A is based on? I'd like to buy truck consumables spare parts where applicable as they are cheaper than the rip off marine equivalents.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Or does anyone know a supplier who can cross reference accurately?

Cheers,

Paul

bump really - but have you tried Keyparts, they do original volvo or suitable equivalents. I have had this quandry many times over the years but concluded that original is best - boat engines are really expensive, filters and oil are comparatively cheap.

Go to your local volvo truck and bus place.

Take along your old filters and check them against the off the shelf truck items. The part numbers won't match, but they should be the same spec, probably. But Volvo obviously won't stand by that cos they don't want you to sue them.

HOWEVER, having done just that in the past (http://www.volvotrucks.com/dealers-.../dealersandworkshops/hayes/Pages/default.aspx) I then chickened out and bought the genuine parts from Keyparts like normal.

Like Kashurst says, for the few pounds difference per filter, is it really worth risking your multi thousand pound engines?

The oil is worth doing though - buy the VDS3 in 20l barrels and its a lot cheaper than the marine branded VDS3 (and that is definitely the same stuff in a different bottle) or even get the Shell Rimula equivalent - sold by volvo too.

+1 on the oil - the volvo stuff is no different than any other VDS2 or VDS3 oil. Also try changing the airfilter, crankcase breather, fuel filters based on volvo recommended hours of use, with a visual inspection if its over a year.

Seems to be the TD63 truck engine.

Personally, I can't recommend enough buying genuine parts. Serviced a mates TAMD60B's with non-genuine parts (actually sourced from Keyparts!) only to find the impellers didn't fit. Only just didn't fit, and they probably could have encouraged to git, but, again... How much does it cost to remove, rebuild and reinstall these big green lumps?

I spoke to the parts guy at Volvo Truck and Bus in Glasgow with reference to engine parts more so than filters etc, there are a few online suppliers, already mentioned.
He said to go onto the volvo engine parts sites like Marinepartseurope etc, note the part numbers you need then give them a call, some of the parts are common, he can cross check and tell you what is available, i've done this excerise for oil seals and a few other bits and pieces.

On a side note i have a complete TAMD63P that was rebuilt by RK Marine for the MOD for sale PM if interested.
Cheers, Barry

After several decades as a VP main dealer I can assure you that if the part number is different the parts are different Volvo did not change numbers unless the part changed except where service exchange units such as injectors starters and alternators had their new part numbers changed to service exchange
You could recognise marine or non marine numbers as with six figure numbers 8 at the start designated marine and later 38 on longer numbers
Originally when Volvo Trucks supplied petrol reg tanker chassis the insulated return senders which had a marine part number were supplied by Penta dealers

Well I'm not in a position to argue with a VP dealer, but the guy at Hayes took me out the back to the racks of filters and helped my find physically identical units. Part numbers were different, and I have no idea what the internal construction / filter medium / filtration level was, but he was adamant they were the same.

Either way, I thanked him but declined, and went back to Keyparts and ordered genuine parts. No idea how much money other people have, but I DEFINITELY can't afford to have my lumps rebuilt!!
