Hi, im looking at buying a boat with this engine.

runs fine, but the oil psi is 90 at WOT. they've checked gauge, sender, filter, relief spring etc.

30 at low rpm.

Also the engine WOT is 4100-4200rpm.

Again, runs fine at that, but ive read conflicting reports it should be 38-3900rpm.

The volvo manual says max wot psi is 92.5psi..... As its not been maintained to a good standard in my opinion, im going to strip and clean all auxiliaries. and go through everything.

But i dont want to be stuck with a engine out job to rectify a possible high oil psi.

any info if all sounds ok?

Who are we to argue with the WS manual if it says 92max then 90 is ok

Is WOT 4100 under load ?

Will purchase one of them.. suprisingly cheap.

So i shouldnt be concerned that the relief valve is the only thing stopping the oil psi going above 90.

If it is running around 4200, do i just stay under 3950. Or is there more to it other then incorrect pitch.

If the boat is empty and pulling 4100 with a clean bottom then change nothing, bit of weed and usual owners pile of stuff and it will be perfect! It full and 4100 then consider a change, best of all re check as per VolvoPaul, we just reset our as they had become 10% different most frustrating!

Can I ask what she is called ? Think I might know.
And I agree with Volvo Paul rev counter could be out and you do know they are adjust able don't you ?

Not sure on the boats name, wasnt named on the Hull mate, enlighten me...

Got a tach rpm laser coming, thats good to know, is it on the back of the gauge?

90 psi sounds a bit high. Think the tamd61 runs at about 60 odd psi cruising on the plane. Not sure about flat out. Filter bypass must be opening right enough. If it's within spec, fair enough, but perhaps a filter change would see it right, then if not, think about a prop pitch increase. Perhaps it's propped for canal use and slow speed manouverability ?
She must be off the gauge when cold !

relief valve kicks in at 90psi mate, so it wont go above that.. hot idle is 30psi

I was hoping max 70psi.. hence my worries, the WOT rpm is definitely not a huge concern as the oil PSI is,

You are spot on. Relief valve is the same as the filter bypass valve. Pretty sure Volvo Paul will be best placed to advise, but as a 10 year professional, then 10 year amateur, part timer, I'd second what's been mentioned previously. Although I've never met Volvo Paul, he seems to be faultlessly marked. All I was sayin was that your oil pressure (at 90psi) was right on the limit for that engine. That's why I said that the oil filter bypass valve must be opening.
Get the filter changed....see what happens. All the best...Allan

Has the oil pressure been checked with a mechanical gauge? There are two oil pressure sender part numbers for this engine. One is to run 2 gauges and the other one is for 1 depending on the number of stations. The wrong sender and you get the wrong reading.

Has the oil been changed? The wrong viscosity oil could also cause this.

Hi. Its definitely the correct sender, its a standard MF805 build.

They've had there engineer look, done filter, check relief spring, id assume he put a mechanical gauge on. As its in spec, they stopped there. I will be going through all parts anyway, incl full service.

Even though it's standard build there's a chance the sender could have been replaced at some time unless you have owned from new and can account for all work carried out, don't just assume he's checked with a mechanical gauge, ask for the figures.

Will investigate further. Also will check the sender ;) as its in spec, i cant grumble to much. But will be doing all i can to make sure its ok.

Wondering if you ever resolved this issue ? I am having similar pressures on my TAmD41
