Volvo TAMD41A lift pump issue?

I wondered what symptoms anybody may have had from a tired lift pump? do they either work or is there an in between not working well stage? if so what could evidence this.
The diaphragms are not ruptured, no leaks and engines start on the button. A previous owner seems to have removed the little filters from within them, they are missing.
Responses may influence my decision as to whether to buy a new one for our pair of engines to tinker with!
