A friend has just purchased a 10.5m boat fitted with a single Tamd 71b. It looks pretty rough but starts on the key and runs pretty sweetly.

I've just sailed the boat back over from Ireland and while it ran fine, I noticed a few things, so I like to prevail on the forums knowledge regards these items.

1. A lot of steam from the exhaust - defo not smoke, - seemed to vary in amount. Is this normal?

2. There is a small amount of oil in the turbo, visible when the air filter is removed. Mind you air filter was shocking so may be part of the cause. Things we should look at?

3. The engine is going to come out shortly to deal with a host of other issues. It's a 2000 hr engine so not many hrs in the scheme of things, however while it's out I suggested that things like all the hoses are changed, while they're easy to get at. In addition the owner would like it given a thorough service and check over (will be operating in a remote area of Scotland where getting mechanical assistance is costly and time consuming) and also to have the engine tided up with a lick of paint. (it does look pretty unloved!)

Does anyone have any recommendations as to who he might consider sending the engine to?

Thanks in advance

Rob

I had a pair of 71b's, they would smoke a bit when cold, nothing when hot. After 2000 hours check out the entire cooling system and the exhaust elbow, either gunged up cooling and or elbow or seawater pump tired.
Oil in the turbo, could be leaking seals , have you checked for shaft play in the turbo?
Who to send it to, sorry can't help on that one.
