Volvo tamd 71a

How many hours should the tamd 71a be good for before rebuild or replacement?

That's a question I doubt anyone can answer, as there are no replies.

I have just rebuilt a pair of 61s that had done over 6000 hours, but they were well ready.

It all depends on how well they have been looked after over the years, what boat are they in as that also has a factor, under use is as bad as over use and no servicing.

Most commercial vessels have great history as they have to be reliable, but pleasure craft are a law on there own. Budget on 50 hours per year average use.

Engines of that age suffer more on the cooling component side as they rot away, so have someone check over the motors and have a sea trial before you buy.

Sorry...........

to hijack this thread, but the TAMD tag caught my eye. I'm currently in Qatar and teaching on a "vintage" Trader which we think has TMD 71A in her.

We can't get more than 9 knots at the moment, but I think that this may be because the props are fould badly. Anyway question is what should the pull max revs and when would the turbos cut in?

At the moment max revs are 1,700 and I don't thinks the turbos are cutting in.

What also makes this boat "fun" is the fact that it has gears and throttles separate - plus it has some equipment on there that is really vintage. I will post pix under a seperate thread. Again sorry to hijack!!:o:o:o
