Impressed with support. Logged with Victron and within two hours BMS tech (battery megastore) called me for further details, presumably they’re the distributor although I did buy from them too.
Response was essentially “yes that’s weird” and following a bit of a discussion he confirmed my setup seems correct. They will feed back to Victron and try to get to the bottom of it. He agreed it might be a next gen product kind of a fix.
Not had this, so would be interesting the hear what Victron say. BMS tech offer really good service.

Yes I was very impressed with the call, although the outcome was pretty much not to expect a solution (as expected!). I do wonder how often this actually happens and people just don't look at the rev counter and notice so it's a hard one to be sure isn't happening. Why wouuld you even check the tacho after installing a B2B charger - took me ages to notice! I'll do some more testing anyway and hopefully get some better context on what's happenning.

It's entirely possible something is wrong with the alternator, of course. With so few examples it's hard to tell. Worst case an alternator won't break the bank for testing. There's also the possibility that the Orion is malfunctioning, but it's doing exactly as it's supposed to so I feel that one is unlikely.

Agree with all you say. Another possibility is how the cabling is run. This could account for it only happening with very few installations. As I said previously, capacitive or inductive coupling with cables bunched together. May be worth checking the cable runs as part of your investigations. Interesting "GEEM" has said he has similar.

Just revisiting this one in case anyone finds it in the future. After much troubleshooting (thanks all for help) it definitely was the Victron Orion Smart 12/12/30A that I had fitted. It seems these feed back enough to add some additional pulses which the tacho interprets as higher revs.
Having upgraded to the Orion XS the problem is solved and revs are normal again. No official acknowlegement from Victron but the new device sorts it so I'm happy enough with the outcome.

The Orion Smart is a pain. I get a revs readying higher than actual. If I want to motor at 1200rpm, my normal rev setting, I have to turn off the Orions then set the revs, then turn them back on again. Victron don't seem interested in the design fault or even acknowledge it even though I tried to contact them, they don't respond

As above I got a response from their UK partner (BMS) but no follow up. Useful to know the new generation doesn't suffer the same problem, it was driving me crazy and yes I did the same turning it off and on again :)
