Sorry - couldnt resist. Yes apparently there are 14 pole ones and 10 pole ones and 8s as well but according to the Adverc man, the 12 poles are much the most common. And if yours is already 14 poles you can get an uprated alternator without alterning anything else anyway.

Current one is 12, new one is 14, and with a different size pulley. My tachometer is currently under reading by 15%, I will have to check it again when I put the new alternator in. I'm also working on my MK2 digital fuel gauge (which has a tachometer in it) the previous one had a problem with the Nokia LCD modules.
