Volvo Supercharger (KAD) servicing

you are checking the oil level with the dipstick screwed in?

Yes. Just an observation here though. Each engine has a different style dipstick on the SC. I'm presuming one is the original SC - 23119190 and the other the later 3581061. Either way they look identical in every respect but on the latter the dipstick marks are definitely different.

I checked my supercharger oil today and in both cases the oil was precisely on the high mark and looking like new oil.
Which doesn't help except to confirm supercharger oil consumption is not normal.

A friend says the oil in one of his superchargers is milky, suggesting moisture in the oil. Can't think how that might get there.

Interesting. In the VP owners manual it's on a every 14 day checklist to check oil level.

Volvo Penta almost certainly also suggest checking the engine oil daily but that doesn't necessarily mean any oil top up is required . I have yet to top up a kad 32 engine oil (or supercharger oil ) between services. Can't say checking supercharger oil has been on my regular engine bay check list but will probably do so more often now.

I hope I can claim to write with some experience as I have owned one boat with a single kad32 from 2008 to 2014 and the present boat with twin kad32's from 2014 to present and averaged something like 100 engine hours per year.

I've had KAD engines (32, 43, 300) for approx. 15 years now. I have *never* had to top-up either the engine or supercharger oil.

The only issue I find with these engines is coolant. They like to be kept on the 'min' mark in the header tank (header tank is way too small for the quantity of coolant required).
