volvo stern gland

The timing chain cover is salt water leaking from the pump. As I suggested earlier, remove pump, clean up cover, etch prime and paint. Slightest weep from the hose connections causes the corrosion. Also worth changing the seals in the pump while you have it out.

Will do, thanks.

Not unusual. Take the fitting out of the block and clean. Agree avoid taking the head off. Take the exhaust off first and clean. Also check for deposits through the anode plate.

The exhaust is off. I have a new stainless steel one from Ben Cotton in the USA to go on. I will take the water pump off in the new year and clean it up. Don't worry, I am not going hell for leather, that's why I came on here for advice first before I removed anything (apart from the exhaust elbow). I was concerned by the carbonisation that I can see in the head and I can't access it sufficiently to clean it, hence why I was considering pulling the engine forward to take the head off.

If I am going to do this, i was thinking about replacing the stern gland at the same time as they are not expensive, and this would only be able to be done once the engine is out of the way. I don't want to remove the engine twice if you see what I mean.

I am pulling the engine forward for a head off de-coke and valve re-grind, as well as replacing the exhaust elbow. I may as well replace the 10 year old stern gland as I am replacing the cutlass bearing, and from tonight, probably the folding prop too! i have had it off and one half rings 'true' and the other is a pinky colour and rings 'dud'.

I have just bought this boat and TBH, methinks I have a lemon!

Surprised that nobody has mentioned Vyv's site

It contains pictures of the Volvo seal with the correct clamp plus a cross section through the seal

How best to remove the old cutlass bearing?

Have you got a P bracket? if so take prop off with the help of a puller and wooden mallet. Scrape paint of p bracket and find grub screws, then remove. Probably going to need to take the prop shaft out as well, but try a drift first. Measure carefully the length and diameter both inside and outside. If you don't have a P bracket then take a photo and post on here, someone will know.
