One of the spade conectors has fallen off the solenoid to the starter motor for my Volvo Penta 3000 MD 5A. I am wondering in view of the age of the starter motor whether it is worth repairing or replacing it with a reconditioned starter motor. Does anyone know of a good supplier of reconditioned marine starter motors?

Thanks
Steve

Try your local car Alternator and starter motor repair man - he will be about 10% the price of a Volvo starter motor! - or he might be able to repair it.

If the starter motor on your Volvo is the same as some others I have worked on, it will be a Bosch unit very similar to the ones fitted to VW cars and vans. Over time the braided connection that goes from the solenoid to the field windings becomes corroded in marine conditions and eventually crumbles away. It would be well worth you having yours reconditioned by a specialist auto electrician and point out that this is a known problem. Whatever you do, don't buy a Volvo one. I priced identical units from Volvo and VW about 8 years ago. Volvo 550 pounds. VW 110 pounds. I had mine rebuilt by a company in Wrexham for 40 pounds.

I had mine (MD7A) overhauled by an autoimotrive electrical shop; the solenoid and the brushes were replaced for less than $ 100. The Volvo price for a new one would probably be around ten times that much
