Hi Guys,

Does any one have acopy of any articles on changing a sail drive diaphragm. I'm planning to undertake this unassisted in Jan....whish me luck!

Jamie

And the article doesn't mention that the kit of parts is very much cheaper from Keypart (or it was when I bought one).

That's where I got mine from. It does comes with full instructions but it's nice to have the PBO article(s) with the photos as well.

If you have an early Volvo engine (see here), check the gearbox input shaft splines for wear whilst you have the opportunity. I did and found mine were nearly knackered so I fitted the D B Marine hexagonal drive conversion.

Parts not in kit...

It is worth buying the kit well in advance so that you can see exactly what is in it. It will contain the diaphragm and all the o-rings, seals and wire necessary for the actual diaphragm replacement but you will find you need some extra bits for the associated tasks.
1)The instructions suggest Permatex is used on the leg gasket although this is a generic brand name and is omitted from the kit. Loctite 5922 Flange Sealant is what I (and others) seem to have used. You will find it for £5.99 in Halfords. NOTE - this is used on the surfaces of the leg oil/water gasket and NOT on the diaphragm itself which is clamped between the halves clean and dry.
2) If you're going to have the saildrive out then you might as well replace the water and oil seals around the prop shaft. I seem to remember these are not part of the kit. They will prevent sea water entering the leg for a few more years!
3)You will be draining the oil. Make sure you have the small drain plug o-ring seal.
4)Whilst the metal clamp ring is out rather than spend a fortune on replacing it you might as well sand and paint it. Get some good paint/primer in advance.
5)Silicone grease - useful for assisting with the insertion of seals and o-rings.
6)The kit includes all other o-rings for the gearbox - Whilst out I took the liberty to used them all. Some say if it's not broken then don't fix it. I did replace and they're all good now!
Any more questions just ask... If you can say what exact leg/engine/boat we might find more tips/photos.

7) Contact adhesive for the external flap will also be needed. You will probably have pulled this off before lifting the drive (and taken the prop off and shaft out as well). Some suggest contact adhesive and others suggest Sikaflex 291.

8)If yours is the Volvo saildrive with the quarter turn plastic blue water seacock which is stiff then Volvo do a replacement adapter and ball valve - part 65A at the attached.

Keypart do their own version for half the price.
