Volvo Problem

Sounds like the turbo to me, furthermore if the engine stopped unexpectedly (net in prop) it is possible for turbo to be blown due to lack of oil at high temperature.

On all our volvo engined plant it is a requirement to run at idle for at least 30 seconds before shut down to protect the turbo. This is not so well advertised on boats as perhaps it should be but it may be that there are no situations where you would intentionally stop an engine from speed.

No, the engine never stopped when it went wrong, cruising at 3000 revs when the port engines revs started to fluctuate with black smoke coming from exhaust. slowed down and checked oil pressure and water temp then tried again this is when the engine refused to rev higher than 2500 without smoke.
I think the net is an aside to the problem and not related, more than likely picked up on the way back.

BTW it is the turbo and a new one is being fitted today.

Just in case anyone is interested I have just had a call from Peters in Chichester, they are fitting the new turbo today. The problem with the 'old' turbo was they found a 'foreign object' in it.
